This question is not for myself My friend has a puppy aged 3 mts she settled puppy down for bed 3 nights ago and following morning pup had a fever and could not walk . pup lives in the house no draughts no wet all well in that department.
the vet is an excellent one i use him myself he has a great reputation for his deep love of dogs and his skills he gave him antibiotics , and anti inflammatory tablets and ,injections .pup came round and appeared to be well untill next morning same thing ,and then after a few hours down again .vet came to house this time and reckons he has a bone illness the poor pup is very sore and my friend is in bits in case she dies .the vet says he is not sure what is wrong he has done exrays .and we are waiting for results of blood tests. puppy is eating and going to toilet yet she has a temperature 104 and is just not able to walk is there anyone out there has had anything like this happen .oh vet says he has seen this in gsd from time to time called mastiotisi think or something like that but stll not if that is what is wrong

Hi Marie, I am no experton GSD's but had an 8 wek old pupy, previously completely healthy that "went down " overnight, was revived evry few days with a cortisone injection - he appeared near death with very rapid resp. high temp, very yellow wee. The cortisone seemed to work like magic but only for a couple of days. After he went downhill again after the 3rd jab and still no diagnosis
I got a second opinion.Itseems he was suffereing from a severe Auto Immune Disease
confirmed by a PM
- I cant remember which one, and sadly wasput down as there was no hope. I trust this second vet implicitly ( he used to be my vet, then we moved, but decided to use him again). It was very sad. I hope your puppy recovers, and that it is not so serious as mine was.
Sorry about the spelling misakes, for some reason I cant go back and correct them.

Very yellow wee is almost certainly kidneys. Definately in humans! I spent several months in hospital with that when I was 12 years old.

Yes, his kidneys were affected by this type of AID. there are a few different sorts, but he had the classic symptoms of one of them. After reading rachel's post it reminded me that he was also severely aneamic, again almost overnight, with paper white gums - poor baby. He also appeared bloated. I sat up with him night after night, giving drops of glucose water but we couldn't save him. He did go off his food and drink when he was "down" but recovered rapidly with the cortisone, so that he could eat/drink/play again. It was dreadful seing him going down again each time the cortisone wore off. He was kept alive by this idiot vet for 2 weeks, suffering dreadfully, when he should have been diagnosed and put to sleep much earlier. Needless to say I didn't pay that vet, except for the intitial consulation.

Westie Lover mentions auto-immune disease which spurred me to find a recent DW article: Autoimmune disease: some anecdotal evidence:
General Observations regularly reported before a diagnosis:
*Depression and lethargy, and a look of premature ageing.
*Skin irritation, skin sores, nail bed problems, mouth ulcers, nose or anal lesions.
*High temperature.
*Weakness in the legs.
*A tendency to lameness.
*Anaemia.
*Intermittent symptoms that can disappear and reappear.
*Young to middle aged dogs were most commonly affected.
*Ongoing symptoms that even after treatment remain constant and unresolved.
As this disorder appears to becoming more common, the Queens Vetinary School Hospital is presently doing research into it. In the event that it is an AI illness it is possible to assist in the enquiry - think you fill in a questionnaire?? for further info contact
CIMDA, 73 Osidge Lane, Southgate, London N14 5JL, Tel 020 8368 9148,

I do hope the condition is not this serious, and the dog gets on the mend soon - must be a traumatic time...
Best of luck to the pup - let us know how he/she gets on.
Rachel:)
PS more info in the article on the various types of AI if you need it - just say and I'll type them out...

I have a copy of a report done on a seminar run by the CIMDA as I have a puppy diagnosed with AID. I did lots of research and lots of fantastic people helped me. Jo from the CIMDA was wonderful and very supportive. If you or indeed anyone else wants a copy of this seminar I would gladly send it. It describes the symptoms and also tell you what do. I let the vet have a copy and the puppy is doing OK at the moment. His AID was brought on by the vaccination and the vaccine company is paying for all his treatment.....

Hi Lynn
How very sad about your puppy, and exactly why many of us don't use conventional vaccine any more. I groom for a living and you suspect these things from time to time but in 1995, in a 12 month period, 14 of my parlour dogs either died or had serious auto immune problems directly after their puppy vaccination or boosters. I would appreciate a copy of your report. Would you like an e-mail addy or snail mail addy?
