I have had my flatcoat puppy for a week now. She is now nine weeks old and i have tried the taking outside regular thing to try and housetrain and she does wee when we get out there and i reward her with lots of praise and a treat. Since we have had her she has only done one pooh in the house and seems now to prefer to do that outside- i spot the signs in her behaviour when she wants to pooh and take her out and bingo! It's a different story with weeing.I have just taken her out and she has had a wee and then 45 mins later she will just squat down in the house and do a small wee.I ignore her when she does it and clean up when she doesnt see me.but i cant understand why, when she knows she gets treats for weeing outside, does she do it inside with no warning at all.Although she is a bitch it seems as though she is marking somehow.i have 2 cats and having read other posts may this have something to do with it.the funny thing is she goes at least 5 hours each night without weeing at all.She is in her bed in the kitchen and when i get up she hasn't done anything - so i cant believe its a case of she cant hold it longer than an hour.Am i just expecting too much? can anyone offer me any advice please? My previous flattie learnt to go on papaer within a couple of days so i'm not sure if she was just really good or i am doing something wrong this time.

You've only had her a week - she's done amazingly well in that short time - persevere, if she's still doing it at 6 months, then you may have a problem....

Give her time. If she's awake she is likely to need a wee within an hour of the last one - that wouldn't be unusual at all. You have to watch them literally all the time they are awake - relax your concentration for a moment, and there's a puddle! She can last 5 hours at night because she's snug and warm and asleep, so she isn't aware of her bladder filling. Awake it's a different matter. She is aware of the sensation much sooner. I expect you can sleep for hours without needing a wee, but have to go more frequently during the day!

Make sure you remove any trace of scent from where she's been - biological washing powder is good, or there are special products available from pet shops etc - and watch her like a hawk!

Thanks, i suppose i hadn't realised the night time thing. She is doing well really - i just don't want to get anything wrong in the vital first few weeks that might mean trouble later. She really is a brill little lady.just wanted some thoughts and feedback from other doggie people. Cheers.

very young puppies need to be taken out again after 30 minutes of activity/play even if she 'went' earlier. also immediately after waking after a nap and after having feeds.
she sounds like she's doing well apart from this. my pup always needed a second wee after playing for a while even when she was holding it in for 8 hours at night. whilst playing she can hold it for longer now as she has more control, and she is nearly 4 months old. good luck.

Its early days yet, stick with it and im sure she will be fine, i agree with bluebird take her out every 30 mins, Toby was dry day and night by the time he was 4 months but it was easier for us because it was in the summer so the back door was open all day, good luck

I commend you in your progress already,it took me nearly 4mths. to house train my shih-tzu puppy,she did the same thing as your pup,she would sometimes wee inside 20minutes after peeing outside. Sorry i havn't been much help,i just wanted to tell you that it sounds like your well on your way to having her fully trained,well done:)
Like the previous poster said if she still isn't trained by 6mths. then it is a behavioural problem so you still have a few months ahead of you:):)
