Topic Dog Boards / General / Tennis balls - dental risk.....
- By digger [gb] Date 09.11.03 10:11 UTC
A friend of mines 2 year old ESS has just had to have root canal work done - she's ball obsessed and the dental specialist says there is concern that the fabric covering of tennis balls picks up grit and sand and this works like an emery board on the dogs teeth - it can be reduced by regular washing of the tennis balls.....

I don't let my dogs have tennis balls anymore because they eat them. Only takes about 5 minutes to totally demolish one!

Mine eats tennis balls too so they are banned but thanks for the warning, I'd never heard of that before. :)

I heard or read somewhere a while ago that the actual glue used with tennis balls is really bad for dog's teeth - reacts in some way.

Do you think this would be the same on 'doggy' tennis balls bought from the pet shop???

Worried now :(

Yes, apart from the fact that the covering on tennis balls is abrasive, dogs have died from consuming them when they get lodged in the gut and all balls should be on a rope so that they can be removed if they get stuck.
