Hi Mandy - I would probably not feed her for a day... then introduce some pasta and some boiled chicken...what is she normally fed on?

Hi Mandy, yes boneless chicken [$ rice also white boneless fish, turkey, scrambled eggs, live yoghurt, actimel. Did he say when to start feeding her ie] leave her a while before giving her food? If he didn`t check with him, but most recommend leaving dogs 12/24hrs after last bout of diarrhoea. Cook the rice in the water you`ve cooked the chicken/fish in & if you have any stock left over you can give it to her to drink. I also cook a carrot, clove of garlic maybe bit of parsley, celery etc with the meat then strain it & use the liquid for the rice. How old is she & did he give you any medication?
Hope she gets better soon :)

Hi Christine and Mandy,

Turkey is quite a rich meat (or it used to be in the days before intensive farming). If giving bland food is the aim I have to disagree with Christine in this instance and would not add anything to the plain boiled rice/chicken/fish, at least for the first 24 hours of feeding it (after starving for 24 hours) to see how her stomach is settling.

Vets used to "prescribe" scrambled eggs a lot more than they do now because so many people add milk, salt, pepper and other flavourings when preparing them so they were no longer "bland"

Hi Christine, I should have said the turkey breast or white turkey meat which is very easily digested & tolerated by invalids & sick animals. The broth also is strained & any veg discarded which makes a highly nutritious drink & is a good way to keep them from getting dehydrated & a good way of getting nutrients into a dog that has no or little appetite, live youghurt helps soothe the gut & put back the good bacteria especially if a/biotics are being given. The scrambled egss of course should be made without anything being added :)

When Bess has Diarr+Vom I always give her porridge made with water and also Slippery Elm if I've got any. She used to have a delicate stomach when she was on a certain food (changed that now) and the first time she was really bad, had some blood in it both ends. I starved her a day and it made her worse. When I tried the porridge it improved within a couple of hours and she was OK by next day. I've used it 3 or 4 times now and it's worked quickly every time. Obviously you'd want to get back to meat as soon as poss. but I think it's more soothing than meat at first as it coats the stomach. Needs to be made with water only though.

Hope she's feeling better soon. :)
