Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / help, feeding a malnurished pup

i have just bought a lab 16wk pup.picked her up on sun. when i took her to the vet to get her checked he said as well as having worms she was malnurished.
the people i got her from were feeding her bakers adult food (handfull once) a day with bounce tinned food.
she is now on bakers complete puppy food as i didnt want to change her diet too much and i was mixing this with pedigree chum puppy food. i also wormed her. however the last 2 nights she has had diorrea, i know this could be the wormer but could it be pedigree chum as i have herd that it can do this. i have now stopped the pc. and just feeding the bakers. any advice welcome

As a malnurished pup, i would feed little and often, at 16 weeks the puppy should be on 3/4 feeds a day, but you could try 4/5 feeds. If the pup is very under weight etc large feeds will not help. Try a small amount of Natural Bio yougart mixed in with the food, this will help with the runs. Keep in touch with the vet for extra advice if things don't improve.
I'm sure some Lab people will also be along to offer more advice to you.
Karen.

Poor you. I would gradually introduce her to a better quality complete food but in the meantime, give her some scrambled egg, that should help bind her up, the Bio Yogurt is also very good. What about some minced beef, human quality is better, go for the value range in the supermarket it will have a bit more fat content which it sounds like she needs at the moment. If you want to feed tinned, the Butchers Tripe range is the best to buy in my opinion.

When her tummy has settled try a little goats milk, not cows or you will be back where you started. I used to make my scrambled egg with the goats milk. It is easily available in supermarkets these days.

Little and often as the previous poster said is the way to go, large meals will upset her. No treats or chews while her stomach is adjusting.

Good luck

just to make a point about the scrambled egg.......i am weaning two 3wk old pups and every time they have their egg in the morning they get the runs, i know its the egg because the rest of the feeds are complete and their motions are ok, i always thought egg bound them up but not so sure now :)

Always gave mine the squits to, so never use it as a weaning food now, though do give it once they are older and fully weaned.

A 16 week old puppy should be having at least three meals a day. Two meat meals and one milk feed.

Bounce is quite rich and I wouldn't give it to a puppy.

The diarrohoea could have been caused by the wormer (did you weigh puppy to get an acurate dosage), or by changing the food. Even if you keep to the same brand name a change of diet should be done gradually, replacing a small amount of the usual diet with a small amount of the new diet daily until the change over is complete.

I think I would try the tinned Butchers Tripe, puppies generally tolerate it very well as it is bland and has no additives (as long as you have the plain tripe variety). I think I would also mix it with the Pedigree Small Bite Mixer. With a milk feed in between two meat meals, of either rice pudding or weetabix with a good quality milk powder such as Welpi.

Incidently, some puppies are lactose intolerant at an early age, in which case cut out any milk feeds.

I think the food given to puppy by the breeders was probably not suitable for puppy's age, and so puppy was unable to tolerate it and the food passed straight through, hence puppy's malnourishment.

Please, please, please keep in touch with your vet in case puppy has picked up a virus etc.
