Ive just seen a website advertising a breed called a Yorkiepoo (yorkie cross toy poodle), when will it stop, why on earth do people feel it nesscercery to cross breed, why cant they just have a toy poodle or yorkshire terrier? Can i just ask something, when people have the intention of making across breed why do that generally alway use poodles on one side?

Because they are still of the mental age that thinks 'poo' is a funny word to make you giggle.

Because poodles make cute fluffy puppies.

Why not just buy a Poodle then?

Thing is, we will test eyes for any dog and the owner will be told of any problems but only a KC registered dog will get it on paper with a documented record which anyone can check up on. Hip scoring can only be done with a registered dog under the BVA/KC scheme. All of this means that there is no way of proving the health of a cross breed puppy

It is often said that crosses are more healthy and yes, FIRST crosses may be but for example, a Yorkie could be a carrier for CPRA and late forming Cataracts and a Min Poodle GPRA and Optic nerve hypoplasia. The resultant puppies would no show any of these ailments but could be carrying all! It's in the next generation that it would all come out.

I'm not being nasty here or calling anybody with crosses, but I wonder what the ratio is of crosses going to a vets and pedigrees. I'm not being a snob or anything but are people with pedigrees more likely to go to the vets especially as they know if they've got a certain breed that their are certain problems so if anything happened they wd. be more than likely to go to a vet to see if they may have this certain problem.

I know that people with crosses wd. take their dogs too if there was a problem but are people with pedigrees more likely to have the money to be able to afford to go to the vets? Am I digging myself a grave here??? Just would love to know how many crosses are seen in a day at a regular vets and how many pedigrees.

Pedigree owners know of the problem such as HD etc. so are more than likely to have this checked especially if they are going to breed. Just find it really interesting how vets say that crosses are healthier has a paper been done on this?

Its an interesting question really.....are crosses really more healthy than pedigrees????

Well, ive got two crosses, one is a staffy/gsd/lurcher x, and the other is a lurcher, bedlington x whippet/ greyhound x beardie.
Whilst the first one, Rocky is a pretty robust healthy chap, not allergic to anything, heals well frm any injuries etc etc, the lurcher is not.

He has a poor coat (open, fluffy, not at all weather proof), constantly scuffing scratching up his toes and lower legs, is allergic to EVERYTHING, and i wont even consider vaccinating him, as i highly suspect he is one of those dogs that would have a bad reaction to vaccines.

That said, on my various trips to the vets, both for my own dogs, an for work experience n stuff, the crossbreeds only seem to be in for routine vaccs/spays etc, and the pedigrees seem to be in for more serious stuff.....but again, thats not a very representative view.

Be interesting to do a study an find out what the truth really is.

Hi , i have had an Irish setter ,and apart from having stitches in her pads (from broken glass in the river )we lost her at 11 years ,and never a days illness ,then came T.T..x Beardie, also never a days illness ,and now have 10 month old Westie x Lhasa , and so far so good !! i have to admit when we lost Christa(Irish Setter) i was very reluctant to rescue ,as our daughters were very young ,and i felt that if i chose another pedigree i would know (pretty much )what to expect,i have to admit that i was thinking more of temperement, than geneticaly inherited problems , my husbands reasoning was ,that it was easy enough to buy a pedigree , but if i was truelly an animal lover ,then i owed it to the thousands of dogs out there that needed homes ,to give one of them a home with us ! i did not go looking for a particular type of dog (only criteria was low shedding,as our daughter has Asthma ),it just so happened that they have both been first crosses, and i would like to think that any responsible dog owner ,should they have pedigree dogs, crosses or Heinz 57,,would take them to the vets regularly ,purchasing both of my crosses was far from cheap ,in fact i was offered a non K.C reg dog(T.T) for not a lot more than my recue dog cost us Take care Sue & Lola xx
