Topic Dog Boards / Health / Eyes Watering

My 4 1/2 month beagle has very watery eyes (clear thin water). The watering gets worse if she is tired or she goes out in the wind or cold. However they do water continuously to a certain degree.
I bathe them every day and it is starting to stain her fur. There are no other symptoms. Someone mentioned over active tear ducts.
Has anyone else experienced this. If it is an overactive tear duct, does it get better ? Is there anything i can do to help it ?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Beagle,
I'm not a veterinary expert on eyes but I am an Optometrist so I have a few suggestions...The most likely explanations I can think of are
1) Overactive tear production, this is often caused by trichiasis (ingrowing eyelashes) - if this is the case you would need to watch that they don't scratch the cornea which could become ulcerated. Having said that, in humans if they are not causing problems you often leave them because regrowing eyelashes are more likely to be a problem.
2) Problems with tear drainage caused by blocked tear duct or tear duct not lying flush with the eye preventing drainage (poor lid tension). If this is the case I am sure it could be treated surgically but may not be warranted.
3) Viral or allergic reaction (bacterial discharge is normally very sticky) in which case this would often resolve with time.
All these would be worse in windy conditions and when tired.
I hope this is of some help. I would get your vet to check her over - they will be able to use a dye in her eyes (painless) which would show up any damage to the cornea.
