Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Constantly sniffing carpet

This is a new thing with Perry that he seems to have developed to an obsession over the past week. He is a Cocker and i know they are scent dogs, but his 'obsession' with sniffing the carpets is worrying me!
He gets up in the morning goes out for a pee and then he gets straight into his niffing routine.....this AM he even ignored his breakfast to go carpet sniffing. He has favourite areas where he will lie down and get right into the smell of it! oh and the noise!
What is this about?? We have had not other pets in the house to leave their scent, shoes are taken off at the door, nothing has been spilt. I know it souds funny but he has become quite antisocial through this. :(

Two possibilities strike me. One is that at some time in the past there has been 'something interesting - baby perhaps? - on the floor. Unless you have brand new carpets? The other is that he loves the smell of socks and feet!

It is possible he could have either a slight urine leakage or an anal gland problem and making slight drips on the carpet that you might not notice but that he would be able to smell. If you're sure it's not either of those then it could be behavioural and so needs distracting from it before it becomes a big problem.

Maybe there is something under the carpet :)

uuuurrggggghhh, don't say that! When we took the carpets up to be replaced 2 years ago we found a VERY suspicious dark red stain that went down 6 of the stairs.....my husband reckons it was from way back when the house was first built (1889) when people 'dealt' with family differences in a very different way to today!

Is your dog sniffing in the same place? If so then that would be the reason why, funny how they can smell things like that. lol :D

he sniffs the whole carpet but has his favourite spots...about 5 or so.........

Have they always been his favourite spots to lie in or just favourite since he started sniffing?

just since sniffing i have booked a carpet cleaner for Saturday, so i'll see if that helps take up the smells he has become obsessed with.
