As of midnight tonight my doberman had her first pup. It was a still born. She had been having a hard time having it for the past day and a half. I have been in constant contact with the vet and they said as long as she was eating and drinking and acting normal to keep her home. The vet knows of the dead pup and says to wait and see if now that it is expelled that she will have an easier time having the rest. I have witnessed many litters being born but never a dead pup being the first one. She even whined and sniffed around when I took it away. I changed the blanket she was on and used a warm damp wash cloth to whipe her softly to clean her hind end. Afterwards she got up and ate a couple of peices of food and drank some water. Does anyone else have any suggestions as to what to do. There are no emergency vets here plus the vet that is here says to wait till tomorrow after noon before I rush her in as long as she seems to be in no pain and acting normal. Please keep you fingers crossed for us.

I would get her off to the vet asap as well. How long had she been pushing for the first one?

Do you have another vet near by you can use,as i would want her checked out as soon as possible if she where mine,is she still in active labour now,or has everything seemed to come to a standstill, she might need some oxytocin to get her going again, allow her to go no more than 2 hour's between pup's and no longer than twenty minute's pushing,if any off these time's are longer take her /or get them vet to come out immediatley, good luck and i hope everything goes well, keep us updated!

well, more sad news. She has had to more dead pups. None of the three were to term by the looks of things. She seems to get more and more energy after having each pup. She is resting agian. She is eating and drinking and still wants to play with her toys. The vet thinks her age was one of the factors. She is 7. She also thinks that because of the age her litter will be smaller and with 3 dead so far all will be. THis is going to be very tramatic for her. I will be taking her into the vet for a check up but by the looks of things she will be fine. The only thing is she is looking for her babies and she is so swollen with milk. She has helped to raises several litters of kittens as a foster mom so I am going to call the pound and talk to the vet and see if there has been any young puppies rejected by their mother or lost their mother to early and see if she can take the pups. Other wise I will get the vet to give her something to help her dry up.I feel like I am going to cry but I am too tired. I have been up for 3 nights in a row with no sleep during the day. I am just so thankful that the mother is ok. I felt so bad talking to the vet though when she mentioned the age thing. My dog has only be bred twice. Once when she was 2 and then this one. I thought she was still young enough to have a healthy litter. Now I feel like I am the cruelest person in the world to have put her through this.

this must be a very distressing time for you.
atleast mum is fine, maybe fostering would be a good thing. if not i'm sure the vet will be able to give her something to dry up the milk.

very sad news,

im so sorry nicole, its heart breaking to lose a litter, my amber had 14 puppies , born too early and we lost them all, if you cant get her a foster baby, you have to help her get her head back to normal, lots of loves and keep her occupied, amber stole teddies as replacements and i was advised not to let her keep it as it would make her worse, she grieved for her pups, very down in the dumps for a while and her hormones were all over the place, but she pulled herself round after a week or so and she is fine,
keep your chin up,

Hi nicole,
sorry to hear your sad new's,don't feel guilty, these thing's happen and you've just been unlucky, you learn't a hard lesson and i think that's punishment enough.
if anyone's tempted to give nicole a hardtime due to the age of her bitch, please dont! i think she's been through enough.

The age of the bitch was not excessive, but as in humans giving birth and pregnancy are easier when young. I Certainly don't think it was wrong of her to have mated her bitch if she is a fit seven year old. this could have happened to any bitch of any age.

totally agree brainless ,but you do find some people who post on this site, can,t wait to pull people down ,and i suppose to some people 7 will be in there opinon to old.

I would only be a little critical if it were her first litter but as she has previously had a litter, presumeably with little or no problems, then there is no problem with mating at this age all being well in my eyes.
I'm sorry you've lost all the pups so far but I would suggest getting her to a vet to make 100% certain she really has finished.
