hi, could someone please explain why, i have been told that i should not show my gsd at manchester as the person told me that the judge likes germanic dogs only, and mine was english what is the difference and is this true.
the reason i ask is it is 3.5 hours travelling to the show, and as i am only 15 my mum drives me there and i really don't want the same experience as i had on saturday at the scottish show.Thank you for any advice

Hi Amy
When you've been showing a while you will discover that good judges judge to a certain type. I'm not a GSD owner, so others can explain better the differences between German & English, but in any breed there are judges who will always put some points (movement, heads, colour, size etc.) above other things & when you've more experience you will find out these things for yourself. What you have to bear in mind is, that some people will discourage you because they don't want you there! If you trust the person that told you this, then listen. Ch. Shows are expensive & there's no point in having your dog "knocked" because the judge simply doesn't like your sort of dog.
People will tell you that there is only one correct "Type", whether it's Shepherds or Poms. However, everyone is free to interpret the standard as they wish & it's up to you whether you enter a show or not.
Good Luck.

Hi Amy.
GSD's do fall into two catargories, English type and Germanic type. I favour the Germanic type, but others prefer the English type. English types have shorter legs at the front, (or shorter upper arm?) a level topline and a distinctly different look about them as against the Germanic ones. This weeks Our Dogs newspaper has a "Seiger" supplement full of Germanic type dogs, look at them and you will see the differences. It won't be worth wasting £20 pounds or so if you have lost before you get there.

Thank you i have looked in the seiger supplement and i can't find the judges name in the supplement,so how do i find out now.
the lady that told me not to bother going i have beat her dog at the 7 shows that i have attended with my puppy gsd so as you have said could it be sour grapes.
As we are new to showing mum says it is like a minefield .

Hi Amy it really depends on how english your puppy is, Tracy likes a dog to be capable to doing a days work, also look at the JASUETER web site and look at the bitches on there Tracy Wall bred norwulf silver locket and you will see shes not extreme either way just a nice balanced bitch, me and her are usually in the same class, I am going with my bitch ,, but its upto you

the thing that is worrying me is if they went on like the scotland show, shouting and whistling and running on long leads etc,i have not trained her to do this, and i thought that double handling was not allowed.
well i am off to school now had half the morning off to study for upcomming mocks.

Hi I understand how you feel but I dont think that this judge will allow this to go on, she shows at the shows that I go to and it does not happen there, and no double handling is supposedly not allowed but it does happen in all breeds albeit some worse than the others, where else are you going to are you going to Uk breeed show at the end of Nov maybe I will see you there

Well it does the majority but I was meaning more gsds than anything which is my breed, and some are worse than the other, but I am going to stop it about double handling I commented only because the poster had a bad experience with it at her last show, because I only know too well if this topic continues what the outcome will be
