When I visit my cousin her GSD guards my 2 year old the minute we arrive until we leave. Even when I put her coat on he's not happy, he is great with her and follows her everywhere and she loves this and lies beside him and cuddles into him sharing all her food with him although I'm not worried about him harming her is this going to be a problem for her with other dogs who maybe don't like being cuddled, we have tried puting him outside or in the kitchen but he howls to be near her and licks her loads the minute we let him in are all GSD's like that?

GSD's tend to be more 'one man' dogs - but they do take their responsibilites very seriously, and it would seem your cousins dog has included her child in that.... Be careful that you aren't inadvertently rewarding the crying and howling by letting the dog back in as you can start a viscisous circle - the dog is put out, he howls and cries - this means he is let back in, if he isn't let back in he will do it more and more, which isn't always convenient :(
