Hi My name is Marie, I live in Gloucestershire with my husband, two children and we will be getting a Chocolate tibetan terrier puppy in a couple of weeks. Its our first dog so its very exciting but also abit scary, any advice on the best way to house train him at this time of year would be very much appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi fillis, Just out of curiosity what was your first choice.

Marie - Soft Coated Wheatens - I couldnt choose between them and TTs when I first wanted a puppy, but when I met them, I couldnt resist, and now I have 3! I do know someone who breeds both wheatens and TTs and I'm jealous!

hi again, thanks for your reply, we are going to call him Rocky, it was going to be Neo, but I thought it was too close to No. might confuse him. My daughter chose the names.

I marierose, welcome to champdogs, all the breeders of my dogs have always told me that the minute i pick the puppy up and get it home to put it straight in the garden and when it does its buisness give the pup loads of praise and you should do that every hour for a couple of weeks, it certanly worked with all my dogs, my staffie was housetrained in 6 days- i couldnt believe how fast it worked with her.

Thanks for the advise, I have read abit about crate training, does anyone know if this is a good way to house train a dog or is it better to do paper training. I supose its a matter of personal choice but I would like to try and get as prepared as possible before the big day. Thanks for all the replys so far.

Welcome to the Forum :) House training can be the same whatever time of year ..you just tend to need a brolly for yourself in the Autumn ;) Take the pup out roughly every 15-20 minutes or so and have a phrase that you use every time ..we use *Hurry Up!* ...keep the pup out until he wees or poos and then praise long and hard ;) :D Also take him out after a drink and/or food.
IF he has a mistake in the house don't say anything ..just take him outside and repeat the process above. Wash the soiled area with hot water and biological soap powder as this will kill the odour. Depending on the pup and/or breed , he could take anything from 2 weeks to 6-8 months to house train but the secret is to be consistant :)

thanks for your info Melodysk, It was very helpful, just hope that he is going to be a couple of weeks rather than months. Still it will be worth it in the end.

Hiya, welcome to the boards :)
I'm in the process of housetraining our puppy at the moment, and it's working brilliantly. He's so good, and although we've had a couple of piddles in the house, we've never had a number 2 :D
I take him out after he's eaten, played, wakened and probably every half hour or so, and he's now crying to get out into the garden if he needs to.
Just be consistent, don't make a fuss if he goes indoors and give him lots of cuddles and a treat when he goes outside.
Good luck with your puppy, and let us know how you get on.

Hi! welcome to the forum!!!! Hope you like it here, i do ;-) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I crate trained my baby very sucessfully but its easy enough without if you prefer not to have one. My girl slept in her bed (crate) every night and used it for rests during the day. If i went out she was in there with the door locked for her safety, and to keep my house in tact!!!!
As Melody has said, i would take her out every 20 mins or so for a pee, she soon learned to do it outside.
I differ from others on the accidents side of things tho. If she slipped up i would show her it and ask her sternly 'whats that?' i would then tell her 'dirtys outside' and take her out comanding 'do your stuff'. Lots and lots of praise in a stupid squeeky voice does the trick!!!! Now she pees on command and hardly ever slips up, if she does its always my fault for sleeping late!
I was lucky with poops, the whole litter were doing them in the garden at 6 weeks and they carried on from there. God knows what i did right!!! :-)
I hope you have lots of fun with your new baby! Theres nothing nicer than a Christmas puppy!!!!
Take care

Thanks sharon and caz.
I have got a crate which I will use, what I am not sure about is what you do at night. Obviously you take him out to do his business last thing and first thing in the morning, but will he be okay for the whole night, or am I supposed to take him out in between. I am assuming that I won't but then will he mess his crate as he will be 8 weeks when I get him. Sorry for being so vague here but there is alot to take in. I have two children but this is all new to me, although its alot like getting ready for another baby. Am I the only one or does everyone find it abit daunting the first time they get a puppy.

Hello :)
Welcome :)

No No! We are glad to help and we all start somewhere!!!! :-) A new pup can be a bit of a nightmare, especially if you don't know where to start.
For the first few weeks i would pop him in at bed time (say 10) and take him out 1/2 way through the night (say 4) and then get up around 8 and toilet again. Gradually move the out at night time forward 20 mins at a time until its just 8 when you get up.
That way puppy learns that you are coming to get him and go out for a pee, eventually, and he will get a huge fuss and tell him you love him and off back to bed he goes.
It does work i promise!!!!
If you get too much crying at night do think about having the crate upstairs. when you have kids there is nothing worse than a screaching pup. If the crate starts off say in your room it can be moved out onto the landing for a while, then to the bottom of the stairs and so on and so forth until he is in the kitchen or where ever you want him at night. Saves a whole family growling at each other through lack of sleep!
Just a thought!
Good luck,
