Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Dobe keeps crying
- By jason3142 [gb] Date 27.10.03 14:01 UTC
As a last resort once again I have turned to this great forum (one day I hope to give something back)

Jezz is a 10 month old male doberman

The current problem is that he keeps crying, if your with him, if your not, after you have spent time with him and all in the same room he just keeps crying/moaning.

What can I do to get him out of this REALLY anoying habit?

Thanks in advance

Jason

Hi Jason,

No idea but if you find out please let me know!!

Some Dobes are very, very vocal and will chat back to you for ages and whinge, moan, groan, hum, almost purr etc at every opportunity.

The only way I can really get my old girl to shut up when she starts to whinge in ernest it to get cross with her and tell her off very firmly - she looks very hurt/shocked that I would shout at her and then goes to her bed (in which after a few minutes she starts to groan/purr again)

If you really get fed up then put him in your car or outside for a while to give your eardrums a rest. The more you talk back to him more they will chat back to you in my experience

I think beeping and squeaking are what dobes do best :D my dobe used to do it all the time, I became immune to it after a while :) unfortunately poor unsuspecting passengers in my car weren't :D :D

hi

My dobe was always talking, moaning, whinging and whining this would be everywhere and none stop, very funny looks in the car as this was when she sang to us very loudly, in the end I grew used to it and could tune her out. Good luck you now have a very vocal member of the household.

Hi,
My Dobe Lola is 6 months now and moans away nicely. She even tries to sing when my other dog bursts into tune. The only problem we have with her is she can't bark yet!!! How old are they when they start to bark??? My previous Dobe seemed to bark at a fairly early age.

Now they tell me....

I read all the books and web sites before buying him.... none mentioned this racket.

Otherwise he is such a lovelly dog, I am sure I can get use to it...... i hope :o)

Thanks for the input

(and no he is not in pain :o) )

Did anyone notice that the only person to consider that he might be in pain was the non-Dobe owner, the rest of us just assumed it was the normal noise. Does this mean that other breeds don't chat (moan, groan, whinge, etc etc) like ours do?

FTR I find that mine tend to be quieter if they are in pain rather than noiser. The other night Rio had stomach ache and apart from noise of his claws on the floor as he went round and round the room all evening he was silent (ended up staying downstairs with him as could hear nothing on the baby alarm).

Hi Christine

I am the non dobe owner. I have springers and they dont moan groan etc. The only time i have known mine to cry was during whelping"!!!. UI dont know how id cope if they all made a racket all the time...

How do you all cope Do they do it all night???

Hi Brinny

No, they don't do it all the time but enough to be noticable. I have three near me at the moment and am just getting the occasional "mnnnnnmmmnnnn" :)

I think it may be a breed thing like some suck their flanks, others cross paws (had one that crossed her front legs before she lay down), etc.

Well, I've only ever had one dobe before, but I can confirm that they do love a good old moan - Cam quite happily talks away to himself or skulks around the bottom of the stairs mumbling to anyone that will listen if I'm upstairs without him. I must admit I find it quite endearing though. Sorry!

Well dont have a dobe but have a staff that does it if you are ignoring him.He sounds like a grumpy old bloke.

I agree it must be a dobe thing but in my experience if 1 starts so does the other, at this moment in time they sound like they are talking chineze to each other ,as for barking my little girl barks when i pic food dish up.It must be exitment

Not a Dobe owner myself - but can admit to having a whingy whiny ridgeback - he has always been a little whinger, even as a young puppy . We went through all the 'is he ok?' panic, but now he is 16mths old we have resigned ourself to the fact he like to whinge!! Out of necessity to remain sane however he does now understand the command ' enough!'

My staffy has got something to say most of the time! He is constantly groaning, backchatting when you speak to him and making noises for attention. My previous one was the same, although not as bad!! A staffy thing I think!

My afghan does it a lot too! It's like I am being scolded for something!

My dobe pup only whinges when she catches sight of someone putting on there shoe's.

And nice to see someone else mentioning the crossing of the front paws, she does this every time she lies down(putting on an angelic look that does'nt work of course)

But our top groaner is our two year old Shih Tzu male. He loves talking to you, especially if you are standing near the biscuit cupboard.

I have a 4 year old dobe that was a rescue dog from the RSPCA and mine is always crying. He has everything - food toys taken out regularly and given attention but he still cries persistently.  You do sort of get used to it but it can also be very anoying!!

My dobe also crosses his front legs but once he has lied down.

Lola crosses her paws, so did Sophie (both Dobes) It looks quite regal :D
Lola stands and looks at me, if I don't chat to her, she starts whinging :D Like Jo, I find it quite endearing. Sophie was a dab hand at telling the time. She'd tune up at about 6am every morning. I always get up at 5.30 am when working but she would wake me up even during holidays :)
