got a 10 mth old pup ( west highland terrier) he has taken to a cuddly toy and his blanket and is constantly humping them (kids have a good laugh) would this improve if he was castrated and if so when is the best age to get this done? He was only bought for a pet so it doesn't matter about breeding side plus brother has a bitch westie and he plans to breed from her would he still have feelings for her when she comes into season as they are around each other a lot

Yes, if you were to have your dog castrated it would totally iradicate any humping plus it isnt to late by any stretch to have your dog castrated, if your not going to put him up for stud its better to have him done anyway. Yes he would have feelings for your bro's bitch, if you didnt have him castated he'd be climbing the walls to mount her but if you did he would still like her the same but just not sexually.

Hi,
If he is castrated it's likely that this behaviour will stop, but it's by no means guaranteed. Castration doesn't necessarily stop sexual behaviour (if they want to they can still mount and tie with a bitch) - but it will stop him siring puppies. You would still be well advised to keep him away from in-season bitches. If you do decide to have him castrated, from 10 months is a reasonable age for a small dog like him.

Nothing is certain in life and to be fair castration may not change anything or it could make your dog a totaly different dog. And you may not be all that pleased by the changes.

IMO you have a male because you like the look of the male so please be patient and let him grow through his teens and mature into the dog you thought you were getting. To remove a large amount of your dogs hormonal system just because he is going through his adolescence is not as far as I am concerned a good enough reason.
