Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / help with new dog?!

Hi, we have recently rehomed a young border collie (9 months old) who seems to have settled in fine. There are however two small problems we have with him and I dont know how to solve them so I hope somebody may be able to help.
Firstly, "rocky" seems to spend all his time in the garden (when he's supposed to be doing his business) running from one end to the other and attacking our adjoining fence to next doors garden and he's causing such a tread in the grass that I think he'll end up in Australia before too long, I do play with him but as soon as I leave he's at it again, any suggestions??
Secondly is his barking. I know that dogs bark and he's not too much of a problem when he's out (except the car!) it just seems to be when everyone has gone to bed, he's not lonely as he shares the kitchen with our other dog. I've run out of ideas, please help!!

Hiya,
I would recommend you get several books - Gwen Bailey has written a good one about "The Rescue Dog", and a specialist Breed book would be helpful. Border Collies aren't the easiest of breeds, and he is also at the 'teenage' stage which is difficult with any dog! (Is he show-bred or working-bred?) Add to that all the upheaval he's had in his life so far, and it's not surprising he isn't settled.

Good luck - I'm sure the books will help, and if you work hard with him it'll pay dividends and you'll have a lovely dog in the end.
:)
