Topic Dog Boards / Health / Pyometra or cystic ovary? extended heat?

I have a Siberian husky that will be 8 months old the end of October. She went into heat ( September 14th) bloody discharge for about 7 days and then had clear discharge for another 7 or so days… and then I thought she would be out of heat by Sept. 29th. On Oct. 3, I noticed bloody discharge again and that lasted till about Oct. 9 or so. Then she had a clear like discharge and she is still having the discharge. Her vulva has been swollen the entire time until just a few days ago, it seems to be going down some, but she is still having a clear like discharge. I took her to a vet today and he only took her temp and looked at her, and seems to believe she has one of 2 things. Either PYOMETRA or CYSTIC OVARY. Does it sound like this is what she has to you or is it possible for her to have an irregular cycle like this with the very first cycles. The vet suggest having her spayed as the best option, but we had planned to breed her, being that she is AKC registered and all. Do you have any advice or info. that could help me out. Any would be great! He said that if she has the PYOMETRA and it goes closed she could be in great danger, so I am trying to do research ASAP to make a decision being that I am not sure what it is, but I don’t know have the money to be able to do all the test on her. I am just wondering if it possible for her to just have an irregular cycle? Also, if I did go through treatment would she be able to have puppies after these problems? Thanks for your time.

Hi sorry your girlie is not well, i have to say that when we have had pyometra here two were closed one that was open from the start but it was not a clear discharge it is blood and pus and can smell and bitch is not looking well, i dont think that i would rush in to spay her just yet i would want her put onto antibiotics now for 10 days strong ones and just watch her keep an eye on the colour of the discharge.but if she goes off you will have to spay jut becareful.

You need to ask yourself if you are prepared to risk her life for the sake of a litter I recently lost my gorgeous lab bitch Minnie aged 2 and a half because I didnt realise she had a pyometra and believe me if I could turn the clock back I would and I didnt have a choice but I would gladly have spayed her if she could have been saved :(

Hi,

Sorry hear your girl is not very well, we had the same problem with my staff Ruby had her second season in June this year seem to bleed stop bleed for a total 3 weeks, we have a male staff so I needed to keep them apart for 4 weeks just incase, but a week after I put them back together I noticed a milky discharge contacted my vet who thought it may be Pyometra and took her down straight away has said that this was extreamly dangerous, but luckily it turned out to be an infection of the womb and he prescribed antibiotics which cleared it up, but I have researched on the forum and on the net and I think your dog would be extreamly poorly as if this is not caught within hours the outcome can be very sad, just a week before we had the problem with Ruby I had to have Jake (stb) but to sleep at the age of 3 years so you can imagine how frantic I was when the vet said on the phone that if it was Pyometra and left anylonger then Ruby could die within hours.

Hope all is well

I am going to have bloodwork done on her. Has anyone had this test done to check to see if she has pyometra? The vet. barely glanced at her and said she had it, but I just don't feel confident. Vets are big on spaying and seems to be the answer to everything. I am being extremely careful. She has no signs of being unhealthy. She is active and eats. Anyone had a dog that had pyometra that was still really active and looked healthy? Thanks for the responses.
