Topic Dog Boards / Showing / To tape or not to tape?(Bullmastiff ears
- By jancx [gb] Date 21.10.03 09:04 UTC
Hi,
Do you tape pups ears, does it cause them discomfort? If I take him out taped will I be branded "cruel". What is the best method? I've tried a number of times to tape them using the method in Bill Walkley's book, but every time my pup manages to remove the tape within minutes.
Thanks
Jan

Hi jan, i have used tape lots of times and it does work well but i also use copydex on the Bullmastiffs and Bulldogs but dont use it if you have any shows booked as it takes a week or two to work off.and you must get the ear in the right place and not too much of the copydex

Hi,
I have never taped my puppies ears, but i do massage them into place, this is quite easy and i do it while watching the telly, my puppy loves it, but it needs to be done every day.
Karen.

Hi,
Thanks for replying.
I've tried copydex, managed to keep that on one ear for 10 hrs. Also massaging, but every morning both ears are stuck out at 90 degrees. They do fall back into place when I put them correctly but eventually they stick out again. He has bones and occasionally tripe chews day and night to let him gnaw on, but still the ears come out. I worry that when I am not with him and able to correct the ears the cartiledge will eventually harden in the wrong position. My 3 yr old has rose ears but I didn't know better in those early days, she 's a dearly loved pet and not for showing.

Hi, I have Pugs not Bullmastiffs, but have the same taping/gluing quandary. We find eyelash glue very effective (you can put a strip of tape on the outside to help hold, if you want) and just use surgical spirit to remove it. Also had some success using toupee or "boob" tape - it is very stiff, sticky on both sides and seems to work well.
bye
Gwen
