As some of you will know my dog Benjy had to have an op three weeks ago for a badly dislocated hock.
He has a fixator and up until yesterday he was doing really well.
Yesterday morning I found him with blood running all down his leg so got an emergency appointment at the Vet. He said it looked like a haematoma had built up around one of the pins and this had burst.
When I came home I cleaned up the blood with a saline solution. It's a shame as he REALLY wants to lick this area (he has a collar on) and it is obviously irritating him.
I was worried in that he wasn't using his leg as well as he was but today he seems to be using it a little bit more (I hope!).
What's worrying me though there is a lot of dried blood around the pin and to me it seems a little bit 'swollen' though I'm not sure if this is the dried blood. I really hope it's not another haematoma building up.
This pin is up in the thigh so the Vet says it is subject to more movement which, in turn, can lead to friction which can cause a haematoma.
He gets the fixator off on Saturday and I'm worried that this problem could affect this? I can't speak to the Vet who carried out the op as he is on holiday for the next five days.
Has anyone heard of this kind of problem with a fixator and,if so, is there anything I can do?
I need something to heal and take the itch away.
If anyone can advise or reassure me I'd be REALLY, REALLY grateful
Thanks!
Liz
