Gus seems to be suffering from itchy paws again . Only seems to be his front two .
I have looked but cannot see anything - no redness , no swelling , no grazes or cuts . We took him to the vets a few weeks ago about this and he was give an injection . When the injection wore off after three days as the vet had said it would , he stared to tremble/shake all over and it frightened the life out of me . :( Vet sggested he was probably sensitive to the injection .
Now he is licking his paws quite a lot but I dont want to just keep taking him to the vets for the injection because of what happened last time .
Can you give a dog Piriton ? And has anyone else had this problem with their dog before - if so what did you do ??

i have lel, a couple of weeks ago, i took max because he was chewing his feet...the vet said his anul gland was blocked which can cause irritation elsewhere...he emptied it and gave me some medrone tabs to relieve the itchin, since then max has been ok regards feet licking/chewing but now he's crawling round the floor like a snake all the time as if his belly itches

anyway hope this helps a bit :)

Itchy paws is a classic sign of food allergy. If there are no signs of HArvest mites then I would look at the diet. Piriton will only treat symptoms not prevent the problem appearing in the first place.

Mine get itchy paws after a run in the fields it usually lasts a few hours then they calm down, one of the things we use that our vet suggested was to bathe their paws with hibiscrub.

Hi Lel
Have the Gritter lorrys been out were you live because the salt can burn there feet but you cant see this. We had an irish setter that did this so much she ate some of her pads off and had to wear socks to go out for walks. Harvest mites are another thing that lives in the feet they live in long grass and on hedges but they die with the first frosts.

Hi April,
no gritter lorries out yet around here. Though with the weather tonight I dont think it will be too long before they are around :(
Can you see harvest mites if its them and do they only affect the paws ?
We take him to the woods nearby for his walk each day and there are fields next to the woods . There is also a grit path there too and I thought maybe tiny pieces of grit may be getting stuck in his pads but I cant see anything there at all . Although his pads do feel a bit dry.
With regards to food he is on Hills Science Plan complete . He looks well on it - do you really hink it could be that ? His coat is really shiny -this is the second time he has been like this in a year .

Hi Lel
My dogs feet have been so dry that they have been spliting because of the dry weather he has also had a lot of sists between his toes this year. dogs sweat glands are in there feet and some times they get bloked.you cant see harvest mites unless your dog is white like my dalmatian they tend to leave the dogs feet orange he had them on his muzzle as well because he was in the long grass. I have found a cure to get rid of them ekoneem oil its very good its a natural insectacide and antibiotic I used to water it down in a spray bottle and spray his feet before he went for a walk and it works. If you would like some just email this lady and she can give you all the info ekoneem@oakbankhouse.fstnet.co.uk it does all sorts of things skin infections sore pads the lot and it is only £8.00 and lasts ages. As to food I will only give tin food or tripe because we had a springer that nearly died eating an all in one food because they put to many additives in them such as vitamins they dont need I always think dogs should have a bit of good old meat like they have all ways done before cans were invented.

Hi Lel, my westie has just had 2 visits to the vets because he can't stop licking his paws, he was given steroids and antibiotics without any luck, he's licked them so much he had little cysts between his toes, have been told to try stronghold because that kills any parasite on the dog, you can only get it from you vet.. about £18, other treatments from the vets only kill fleas, i am trying this and have puit him on the james wellbeloved food as that is for dogs with allergies, waiting for the results, i also bathe his feet in hibiscrub, very good to relieve the itching, melaseb shampoo is also good for relieving the itching, i would try with the stronghold, then the allergy food, failing that its an allergy test at the vets, but if your not insured, its a process of elimination, good luck with Gus...
