Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / toys for a staffy???
- By barneyboy. [gb] Date 17.10.03 17:44 UTC
hi there my staffy, Barney is in desperate need of some toys. He has eaten or chewed everything that i have gotten him. I have bought dog ropes, he chewed them in half, but was eating the threads of rope. Strong rubber bones again he ate them, I got him a vanilla fragrenced hard plastic bone which he does chew but only when he has nothing else.
He loves anything that squeaks but within 10mins of having it, it no longer squeaks and he then proceeds to try and eat it.He loves trying to chew on socks and jumpers if left lying around, what can i get him that will entertain him for a while but that he cannot destroy???
I'm at my wits end and he is getting bored of his ball.

how about a kong filled with all his favourite treats :D

im sorry to be the one to break it to you but youve got a staff so theres pretty much nothing you can do but keep replacing them lol. Even if they started manufacturing solid steel dog toys they would still get staffied to death!

Best advice: Buy lots of cheap toys and let him decimate them all lol.

Hi my staffie is just the same loves squeky toys but he just destroys them. He has a big kong (black one) A boomer ball its solid so they cant desroy them but you need to get it twice the size of there mouth so they cant pick it up (for outside only) mine goes mad for his he will chase it round for hours!

find an old tyre and hang it of a tree or something in the garden if you can't hang it just attatch it to something either with rope or chain
i've got a rottie x collie and he's got a tyre attatched to the tree in the garden and loves it chewing at it and even at times swinging off it he finds it great fun. also try har rubber toys and things like the dental bone shaped toys

Hello the tyre idea is brilliant for Staffs mine is only a baby 11 months and she loves to hang on it but I had to limit her because of her age. But she loves her kong her's is red, and they bounce at odd angles great. Plus a ring three sided ring thing. She also loves a plastic bottle 2ltr pop bottle or similar empty she demolishes those straight off but loves them. Also mine adoresbut demolishes again "cheap" dustpans she pushes them around and kills them.

have you tried the nylabone range. i have a staffy who eats most toys and he still has a nylabone i bought in january. they come in different sizes and flavours. Mine particularly likes the chocalate or chicken flavours and keeps him happy for hours. The big ropes should only be used for supervised play as they can digest bits and it can get tangled in their intestines. hopes this helps

what are kongs? and can u buy them in ordinary pet shops?
- By cassie N ollie [gb] Date 18.10.03 16:56 UTC
there a treat toy there made out of rubber and are wide at the top and get narrower towards the bottom
you can get them from most pet stores and places like pets at home or pet world.
just ask one of the staff and they'l showyou what they are.
you can stuff them with various treats like cheese dog biscuit meat and give it the dog to keep it ocupyed

Don't know how old this post is but I was reading them and saw yours(Barneyboy)..I have a 10 yr old rescue pitbull and 2 8 month old staffies. I too have gone through just about everything imaginable for them to play with...One day I came across an ad for a rubber toy called a Goughnut. I figured why not..tried everything else..They are awesome! They can't seem to gdestroy them no matter how hard they try. (no, I don't work for the company or anything) I ordered the black( I highly recommend the black. It's maxx strength) ball, the stick, and the ring..They love them..I think they love the feel of the rubber. They are guaranteed for life..There is a colored center and if the dog chews(yeah right, ha) through and that shows you just send it back to them and they ship you another for only the price of shipping. I've had these for quite awhile and they have yet to make any significant holes in them. Here is the site if you care to check them out. They are definitely worth it! :)  www.goughnuts.com  Hope your dogs enjoy them as much as mine do :) (I'm in the states & it's located here in the states)

At last a glimmer of hope for my two bored staffies!!!

I am at my wits end with how to keep these two amused.  Jack "The Destroyer" kills almost every toy within 5 minutes.  Unfortunately I am in the UK but I will keep my eyes open for these.

Thanks for not noticing the date you may just have made my two boys a lot happier.

Is not easy to find Staffy proof long lasting toys! My partner had an English Staffy & an Staffy X prior to meeting each other, now have our English Staffy Benny together. Got him for a companion for our girl Bindi once she turned 1. Micheal ended up trying with his Staffy X a "go kart tyre" as was not into the normal toys like Barney. Loved it! So does our Benny who is 8 months old & absolutely loves his, carries it around everyday indoors/outdoors like one of their small, lightweight dog toys. Thank goodness we have a doggy door for them. Also the "Large Starmart Chew Ball" are Staffy-proof & Benny loves it.

Hopes this helps with giving more variety of choice.

We used the Kong for our 8 month English Staffy Benny for feeding him which has slowed his eating to correctly paced. He loves it! I would recommend giving it a try, the worse that happens is your Staffy is not into it. All us Staffy owners know how they are Foodies (do not take a breath in between). This leads to many dogs who are Foodies ending up with twisted bowels & in the stomach where they need surgeries through their lives. My partner's Staffy X he had before meeting him was not interested in the Kong. If we let him play with it outside of meal time, he would! Also try a "Starmart Chew Ball, they are Staffy-proof in durability.
