Lovely, homing a 10 year old is a really nice thing to do. I would never of guessed though might have gone for a puppy but never of guessed a choccie oldie :D

Do you know the people who are having to give her up or is it through a rescue.

Karen
- By LJS Date 16.10.03 16:31 UTC
It is thro Lab rescue !

When I saw her I knew she was right ! I have for so long wanted to have a rescue but it was never the right time or the right pooch but Cassie is the one !

She will be company for Min my oldie so I can take the two youngsters for a good run on their own once in a while so Min and Cassie can snuggle on their sofa together !

I love oldies :D They can give you so much pleasure and love and do urge other people not to over look an oldie the next time you think about rehoming :)

thats great news, bet she's lovely too :)
- By kazz Date 16.10.03 16:36 UTC
Yes your right an oldie. But for tragedy I would now have as always a "middle aged" 9 year old Staffie bitch and the pup who's almost 11 months now. I sometimes get swayed by older Staffs who need homes. You know I might enquire.

I just might, sure there must me "senior Staffies" needing homes.

Go on Karen do it !! They can give you so much and I think people get put off as they think they will only have a short time with them and then will have to go thro loosing them but I am going to make sure however many days she has will be some of the happiest, I owe it to her last mum and dad :)

There is a picture on lab rescue of her under 'Dogs for Rehoming' in the messages section !

The web site link is in my profile ! :)

Well done Lucy! I lost a very dear friend in April, who had a very mad 8 year old Choccie (luckily her husband is still around and kept her), She is now nearly nine and still mad as a hatter, enjoy!!!

Totally agree Lucy there is nothing quite like having an older rescue pottering round the house. We have had two so far, they came to us at 14 and 12 years (seperately) one a stray and one who had spent her entire life in a kennel.

I am a regional rep for Vallhund Rescue and we are trying to set up a foster scheme for people to look after oldies long term, most of the Valls that come into rescue are 8 or over and have normally lived with elderly people, its very difficult to rehome the over 10's although they usually have another 3 or 4 years in them.

Kate

Do you ever rehome oldies with elderly people? My Nan is 85 (?) now, she lost her beloved Yprkie some years ago and has desperately wanted another dog ever since. Unfortunately she isn't very spritely now and can't walk very far, but she is always asking me to find her a little dog. She also lives in a ground floor flat (quite large) but does have a grass area at the front and nice little road she can walk along. Do you think any dog would be suited to that kind of life? She has so much love to give and gets so lonely sometimes. I only live half an hour away so would be able to help with vet trips etc. I have been dithering for so long now, it may be too late ...

Thanks for any info,

Hayley

(By the way I love Vallhunds, they were in the ring next to the Cattle Dogs a few months ago, and they was so entertaining and full of life, definitely a breed to put on my Dogs Wanted list!! :))

Hi Hayley

We always take applications no matter who they come from and judge them on their individual circumstances - there is no age limit. However, everyone is homechecked (normally if your in the North of England involves me and at at least one of my valls turning up on your doorstep) and if a possibly suitable dog comes into rescue they stay with a foster family at first - just whilst they are checked over and assessed. When rehoming we tend to take the potential new dog round firstly for an afternoon, then a couple of days later for a full day, then again over night. The new owner then gets a cooling off period to think about it and if everything is ok then the dog is allowed to go. If you want more details e-mail me.

Don't worry too much about your nan living in a flat - i had my first litter whilst in a 2nd floor flat and have lived in a ground floor flat with no garden and 3 dogs as well (ok so this will probably horrify some people)

Which show was it at?

Kate

Hi again Kate

I don't think my Nan could cope with a Vallhund, however ageing, as she would probably struggle to lift it up on the bed etc, they look like hefty little dogs! But it is good to know that rescues would consider her. I would be happy to take on the dog if anything happened to my Nan, we would just have to be sure that any dog rehomed with her would be okay with my kids and dogs.

We were at the NW&PB Breeds show at Malvern when I saw the Vallhunds, we were really taken with them, were they also bred to heel cattle? Despite their height they look like dogs that could do a decent days work, do you know any that do agility? If all goes to plan with us getting a Cattle Dog pup before xmas, I may see you at some shows next summer!

Thanks for your interest and info

Hayley
