Hello everybody,
I just want to say, i think this website is absolutely fantastic, i have learnt so much from you all, so thank you.
What i wanted to ask you was about the Kennel Cough vaccination. I have a twelev week old black Labrador called Monty. He has had both of his vaccinations and is almost able to go out (he had them almost a week ago!). Anyway while i was at the vets i asked whether he could have his kennel cough job as he was going to be starting puppy training and i thought it would be a good precaution to take. She said that he was too young and that i should wait for a bit. Is this right, should he be a certain age before he gets it and would he be ok to start puppy training without it. I know that it can be a killer and i want to do everything i can to make sure he will be ok. Could somebody please advise me what to do?
Thanks
Claire and Monty
hello guest
I don't know if this helps but I have been taking my 6mth old to training classes for last 3 mths, on Friday evening started hacking slightly and got worse overnight took to vets on Saturday where diagnosed mild case of Kennel Cough and started on benylin and antibiotics . Asked vet about the vaccination for the future but she said waste of money as it does not in 7 out of 10 cases prevent it and it has to be done on six monthly intervals. This was not my regular vet just stand in so not sure if I can trust her judgement totally she did not seem a very doggy person.
Not much help I know

No vaccination etc is necessarily 100% in all dogs. Kennel Cough needs to be done every 6 months, is not 100% effective and does not protect against all strains of Kennel Cough.
FWIW I have never had any of my dogs protected against Kennel Cough and they have never had it and they go to kennels, all sorts of training classes and competitions all over the country.
