I bought a 9 week old lab pup 2 days ago. She seemed fine at the breeders house and we all fell in love with her straight away and couldnt wait to get her home. Later on that evening she started to cough( a strange cough, almost like choking). We took her straight to the vet who listened to her chest and also looked down her throat but couldnt find anything wrong. She has given her an antibiotic injection and said that it could be that she was sleeping on straw at the breeders( we never saw where she was sleeping) and that there are things in straw that can cause infections. I am worried sick! she is such a lovely dog but gets quite upset when she coughs. Does anyone know of anything like this happening to another pup, and if its life threatening. should i contact the breeder and complain? as she gave us a form stating that she had been checked by a vet the previous week and was healthy.

Sounds like kennel cough? you must be careful as this can be a killer with pups and old dogs,at least your vet has her on antibiotics give her drinks of honey as she will have a sore throat it is like the flu so keep her warm and plenty of drinks. and ring the breeder and see what she says? did you see the Dam or any of the pups.
Does sound like kennel cough and could well of contracted the disease in the vets when being checked over as it has a long incubation period. If your vet didn't suggest this I would get a second opinion as it is one of the most common diseases in dogs and is incredibly contagious, I would of thought it would of been the first thing they thought of. Anyhow, KC is usually got over quickly and the dog remains well within themselves. Better kept quiet if possible, your pup given the approriate anti-biotics should make a swift recovery. Dawn.
As the vet mentioned straw, maybe she is thinking it could be Farmer's Lung? Our neighbour had a sheepdog who always slept in a barn & contracted FL, but he lived a long & happy life! Hope your puppy responds to the AB
