Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / When to cut down feeds

I have a Chocolate Labrador who is coming up to 6 months old. Should I now be giving her two meals a day instead of 3 and which one should I cut out, breakfast, dinner or tea? Also, at what age should I start to feed only once a day and at what time is the best for them. Apologies for sounding so thick but cannot find anything about this in my book.

Hi, I usually cut out the midday meal at about that age (and of course increase the morning and evening meals accordingly!) though mine still get a Bonio at lunchtime to 'keep the wolf from the door'! Although it was traditional to only feed dogs once a day, I prefer to feed mine twice, especially as there have been cases of bloat in my breed.

Apparently if you decide to only feed once a day, it is best to give the meal in the morning if you want the dog to be awake and alert at night, and in the evening if you want it to settle down and sleep well at night.

And of course don't exercise too close to a meal (especially if only feeding one large meal a day).

Hope this helps.

It might be easier to gradually make the midday meal smaller (by about half) and increase the other two - less of a shock to the pup too!

Yes good idea.....she is so clever, if I did not feed her anything she would go in a sulk....she can eat for britain but then again she is a lab. Thanks again for the advice x
