Just wanted a bit of advice from all you experienced dog owners out there. Picked up an 8 week old pointer on Saturday (our first dog) and has so far settled in well. Driving me mad with biting everything (except of course his rope and nylon bone). I know he's young but he doesn't seem to pick up on my tone of voice when I say 'no' and I don't want to raise my voice too loudly at him. Any tips? How long can I expect him to chew everything in sight?

Dear guest,

As a rule of thumb most 'teething' chewing is done between about 3 months and 8 months (ish!)But in my experience most gundog breeds then go through an experimental chewing stage that can last until about 11 months. I found that one of the most important things is making sure the whole family uses the same reaction when your puppy is biting something it shouldn't. I have always used a loud 'Owwww' followed by a direct stare to back it up and have found it pretty effective. If your pup chews other things that it shouldn't, you could try putting lemon juice on it - the ground floor of my house smelt very citrusy for a good few months!!
Have fun-enjoy

P.S. You could also try reading a couple of puppy books to get some other ideas, I always recommend 'The Perfect Puppy' by Gwen Bailey for good all round info:)
