Cats can be very funny animals , where other cats are concerned.
If you plan to have a dog , have it from a young puppy ( 8 -12 weeks old ) , but always give your cats an easy escape route if puppy starts to chase them.
When we had our very first dog , we already had three cats , and we used safety gates at the bottom of our stairs , so the cats could easily jump over them and up the top of the stairs , and the dog was left feeling a bit left out at the bottom of them !
It takes time for cats and dogs to get along , but they do eventually :)
Good luck with your search for a puppy.
HELEN :)
P.S. Cats and dogs dont always get along , but they do learn to tolerate one another :)

Ive have two cats and 2 yrs ago got a new puppy yep the puppy chased the cats but as long and you try to give the cat its own space the pup cant reach it should be ok.
One of my cats dosent care about the dog he even lets her lick his head :)
the other cat the dogs scared of :D he put her in her place a long time ago ;) she wimpers because she cant get passed the door when hes standing there cuz she knows shes gunna get a smack. well hes learnt he dosent have to use the claws anymore the actions scares her b4 it comes to that:D they will deal with it..
One problem i do see is your wanting a staffy , the rspca told me i wasent allowed to adopt a staffy pup because i have two cats . and staffys and cats dont mix. someone shed some light on if thats true?

Greyhounds , Lurchers and cats are not supposed to get along - but people still keep them together ;)
My grandfather used to show Staffordshire Bull Terriers , and him and my grandmother kept cats , all living together quite happily ;)

Hi Helen
Too true - I have always kept cats and dogs together and not experienced any problems. That also included a rescued greyhound, a terrier and two cats at the same time. My fav pic of my greyhound is of him curled up on my bed with the cat snuggled in between his front paws.

Hi i have a 3 yr old staffie, house rabbit,2 guniea pigs 5 gerbils! My staffie has been brought up with small animals so is loves then! The house rabbit is only 4 months old and george (staffie) loves cleaning his ears the bunny justs sits there! He is the same with cats and other dogs. As long as you get a small pup i should see no probs as long as they are introduced slowly. And the cats are able to get away when they have had enough. Hope this helps!
I've got 2 cats (10 yrs old) and and 2 yr old Staff bitch and 2 of her pups which we kept from her litter. The bitch is wonderful with the cats, very gentle and to be honest, she's a bit scared of the cats (but we don't let her hear us say that!) and the 2 pups (now 9 wks old) are just getting to know the cats. So far, they're just endlessly curious but they're learning not to run after the cats and will stop running after them as soon as we say "leave" which is the word we always use for their mum as well when she's getting a bit nosy or excitable about something.
I've always had dogs and cats together and the only real problem I had was when I rescued a Scottie male (2 yrs old) and he just would not tolerate the cats and tried to kill one of them once. That was a complete nightmare but I believe it was because he was never socialised with them from an early age because my other terrier at the time was an angel with the cats but then he had been brought up with the cats from a very early age.
