Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Welsh Springer Spaniel?????????
- By guest [gb] Date 30.09.03 00:41 UTC
I visited a dog show at Bedgebury Pinetum in Kent at the weekend. There were some spaniels there that were springers, they were the small variety, are these the Welsh kind. I fell in love with them, and as I am hoping to get a dog soon I would appreciate it if anyone could tell me if they were Welsh or English and also where will I find A Breeder and how much can I expect to pay for a pup.
Many thanks,
Chrissie

I think you will find they were working english springers :-)

I agree with Admin. They are probably working English springers as this is what i have and they are small. They ae either Liver & white or Black and white. I belive the Welsh springers are red & white

I also have 2 very small springers one liver/white and the other black/white, they are english field springers.

Forgot to add you can find breeders on the kennel club site or in the breeders section on champ dogs.
You can expect to pay anything fron £200 - £350 for a good well bred springer, maybe even more but these are average prices.

What area are you from Chrissie, if it is Kent you are already near a good breeder.

Hi Brinny,
I am in Cambridgeshire, the guest mentioned Kent so I wondered if she was from the area, we have been there to see a litter owned by Tony Price the man that does Gun Dog training, he has a fantastic place and I was in my element with so many springers, I would love to work there.
Have you been as you are also in his area.
We didnt get one from him though, they didnt have enough even colour for us.

You can also find adverts for springers in the back of Shooting Times.

I have an 8 year old and a 12 year old working type springer. They are a fabulous breed.

Just recently a new vet joined the practice we use, the vet said when she saw our springer for the first time "ohhhhhhhh look its one of those minature springers, theres seems to be a lot of them round here" what can you say :( (other then she's a working springer) and would they understand.

I have the same problem with my springers, 3 are a good size but the other two are very small, the 18mth is often mistaken for a little puppy because of his size, they are lovely though and its nice to have small ones.

What type of dog show was it? If it was a breed show then there would not have been any working springers because they cannot be shown alongside show springers - then you would have seen Welsh, red and white, and English, liver or black and white. If it was a fun show then you would have seen working springers. I have 2 working springers and they are both a lovely size, however if this is your first dog then do your research because a traditional working springer is more active than a show springer, do not even think about it if you work full time, or you cannot get it out to the park for a proper stimulating walk evey day, also watch out if you are really house proud, these lot can track down water and mud from 1/2 a mile away.
If you have the time and patience of a saint then a working springer is stacks of fun, you will never be bored.
For breeders check out the champ dogs breeders section or pedigreedogs.co.uk.
Depending on what part of the country you are in depends on the cost, my working springer cost £60 in Northern Ireland 3 years ago, but in comparison she would have cost about £200-£250 in Scotland. Not sure about English prices at the moment, probably £250 upwards.
