Hi,Was wondering if any one had tips on puppy crying and howling when left alone at bed time. Have had puppy for 3 days have left him on own for short times in the day,while still been in house. And he whines and cries. As soon as we are back in room with him his is fast asleep. Should we have him upstairs with us? Last night left him for 3 hours before we had to come and get him,And you guessed it he slept with us. Want to get things right.Any comments very welcome. Also been reading board today about how much excersize he should be getting? Many thanks

It is entirely your choice where pup sleeps whether it be upstairs or down .
There is no right or wrong just what is best for you . Although if you want pup to sleep downstairs you really do have to close your ears and leave him to it . He will gradually get used to it . They all do it as they are missing mum and the warmth of the litter . Have you tried a towel wrapped around a hot water bottle or a ticking clock??
Gus sleeps upstairs with us although when a big fat lump lands on the bed it can be rather uncomfortable (and no , I'm not talking about hubby) :D :D

Heartbreaking isn't it when they cry and howl like that but I can assure it will stop when they get used to being alone, it just takes patience (and possibly earplugs!!)

If you do really want your pup to sleep downstairs and not in your bed with you, then you will have to harden your hearts when the crying starts, awful as it may sound. As soon as you retrieve your crying baby, he will see this as a positive response to his howling and therefore will learn very rapidly that howling means he will be cuddled and put in bed with you.

Right now your pup is confused being away from mum and litter and howling is a natural response to this but he will soon learn your routine and come to think of you as his pack and forget his old one.
