Topic Dog Boards / Health / Season at 17 weeks??
- By debbie88 [gb] Date 26.09.03 08:40 UTC
Please can anyone tell me if it's possible for a puppy to come into season as young as 17 weeks. I have asked my vet who said that smaller breeds can mature earlier but I still feel this is too young. Cassie is sleeping more than usual, soiling inside again and my husband said he may have cleaned up a very tiny amount of discharge before he went to work this morning but he's not sure!!!!

Any advice appreciated

Debbie,

It would be very unusual, even for a small breed, to go into season at 17 weeks. She needs to be checked out by the vet.

I would doubt at 17 weeks she would be having a season
could she have cysititus? this could account for a little discomfort
keep your eye on her and see if she is weeing little and often.

Carolyn,
I think you may have a point because she does seem to be doing little wees quite often, I think I'll take her just in case.

Thanks

It is possible but extremely unlikely. I have only ever known one bitch at my club start at 4 months old and she has continued coming in every 4 months. I would look to other causes first.

Take a good size tablespoon of pearl barley (boxes at supermarkets) and boil it in a
pint of water for 20 mins strain allow to cool then let the pup drink the water this will help her.You can feed her the cooked barley in a meal if you wish.
