My outside Dane bitches have always had lovely short nails so I have never had to cut them, but since my brindle girl had her pups in July they have grown like talons and now need cutting. What is the best way to try because I don't think she is going to let me just walk up and cut them. Could this growth be a hormonal thing after her litter as her stripes went into large black patches as well.

Hi,
It could be hormone related!!! I would suggest getting her used to the clippers, show them to her and reward with a treat, then get her used to having her feet and toes handled, again reward with a treat.
Finally clip ONE nail and reward with a treat, if it goes ok, clip another and reward again and keep going until all nails have been done. You can phase the treats out later once she is used to the procedure.
If she is naughty or scared, just do the one nail and spend the rest of your time ( a few minutes) handling her feet and praise for good behaviour.
Hope this helps. :)

Hi Dizzy,
I was thinking about trying the dremel for the nails I take it you find this the best?? I have until now used the guillotine but not happy on my younger 2 as I find it hard to she where to start and stop so thought I would pick up a dremel and try it.. I am always terrified of cutting the wick..

i do all mine with one-once pups nails are thick enough theyre dremmeled, it takes a bit of getting used to the noise, theres 2 speeds, when theyre used to it they get the fast speed-dremmels all the way up to there elbows before they notice

because its a rotary action theres a sort of dust wizzing off as the nail goes back, i often catch the quick in mine, but it never pours, as it just touches the end, --you cant go cutting into it half way through--id not be without them-mines permanently charged.

Thanks I will try your ideas but first I have to catch her, she seems to know when I want to do something to her and does a runner. The dremmel sounds a good idea. My eldest Dane who is 8 will not tolerate anybody touching her legs or her feet don't know why cos I always used to cut her nails I was thinkging that when I have her spayed I might get the vet to cut them when she is asleep but then I don't know how I am going to get the vet near her as she is vary of strange men. Well thanks again for your help.
