Topic Dog Boards / General / Age of mating ability...

Could someone give us an indication of the age a Cocker spaniel dog would be in danger of getting a bitch pregnant? In other words, at what age will he become potent ;-)

TIA

I would guess at about 5 months. However it would of course be extremely unwise to allow him to mate a bitch until he is mature.

Thanks for your reply JeanGenie, it's not that we want him to mate, quite the opposite really. We have a cocker bitch who's due for spay on Wednesday and a little boy who's now 16 weeks old and during play recently we noticed him getting a bit randy, we immediately encouraged him to play in a more dignified manner ;-) but on a serious note it had us slightly worried, especially as our bitch has recently experienced a phantom pregnancy. She was due for spaying a fortnight ago but due to the phantom pregnancy it was obviously postponed, she had a check last Tuesday and we've been assured by the vet that she's now fine to have the operation.

Well, puppies (and adult dogs too!) will 'play-mount' in a non-sexual way - so that element of it is quite normal. If the bitch isn't in season she's highly unlikely to allow him to mate her anyway, and even if they did, obviously there would be no puppies! I shouldn't worry if I were you.
:)

Cheers, I was 95% sure that there was no need to worry but there's always that element of doubt when your new to it all so thanks for the other 5% :-)

I wouldn't worry as your bitch isn't in season.

Make sure she can be somewhere quiet after the operation so that she will be able to sleep it off.

We've got a crate all ready and waiting for her if needs be and the little man will be kept well away from her :-) The worry is keeping her still because she's an extremely lively dog but I'm hoping she'll have a little common sense... grasping at straws there probably *lol*

She will probably want to sleep on wednesday after the op so will appreciate the crate:)
