if a bitch is choc and the dog is a blue roan what colours can u get

Presumably you are talking about Cocker Spaniels? Do you mean a solid chocolate mated to a blue roan? If so, assuming the solid choc has no particolours in the background (so does not carry the parti gene), then all the puppies will be solid (with or without some white mismarkings) as the solid gene is dominant over the particolour gene. It depends on what colour genes each parent carries but you could have all solid black puppies if the blue roan carries no other colours (black being dominant over chocolate) or if the blue roan carries the chocolate gene, then some of the pups may be chocolate too. There are also other possibilities depending on whether other colour genes are carried. Careful study of the pedigrees should give you an idea what colours could come through, remembering that recessive colours like chocolate & gold (orange in particolours) will only come through if both parents carry the gene. The same goes for tan markings (eg black & tan, chocolate & tan) - both parents must carry the gene to be able to produce it.

Jane, perhaps you can help me with something thing that has puzzled me for a long time. I've seen golden cockers before so I know what they look like, but I have seen reds advertised as well. Are they the same? If not, do you know where I would be able to see pictures good enough to study the difference? And am I right in thinking that an orange-roan is a gold particolour - or have I got muddled? (Easily done :o !!)

I would say that a true Red Cocker should almost be as Red as an Irish Setter. My friend's Cockers are a lot darker than the Golden Cockers around at the moment and you can see pictures of them on my website - Sunnerset Cockers.

The Orange Roan's vary as well some are very light orange and then some are really rich and almost red - my Sebastian is more of a Red & White than an Orange & White. As with the Goldens the colour can vary quite a lot from very light Golden through to really rich Gold/Red.

Oooh decisions decisions! I decided a long time ago that one day I would have a cocker, and I determined to have a black-and-tan. But now I don't know if I want a liver-and-tan, or a red-and-white ('cos I rather like Irish Red-and-White Setters as well) instead - they are all gorgeous! (Isn't that red (Merlin) a tad short-legged - or is he standing in a hole?)

I love the Irish Red and White too Jan but the only two I know personally are both terribly gun shy! There are a few working lines still around but not many.

On a different breed, have you seen the very first Gordon Setter Dual Champion has been made up? Amscot Irresista Belle is now a show Champion and Field Trials champion! A wonderful feat!

Hi John, I'm always pleased when a gundog makes Dual (proper) Champion - beauty and brains, eh? Got to be good! Though I must confess I don't much care for Gordons - beautiful animals, but not my cup of tea personality-wise.

Met quite a few Irish Red and Whites at Crufts - lovely temperaments they had! Though of course I don't know what they're like in the field. Even my husband (dyed-in-the-wool black lab man) fell for them.

ive looked up about colour , and im non the wiser :O although i did understand the part that said roan was the dominant colour and even a white american cocker was bred it sill had the tiny markings of the roan blue/ grey in a small arenea on the breast. so couldent qualify as another colour.

He is rather isn't he? These pics are of English Cockers in the US where type is often somewhat different than here in the UK :-) Merlin also looks more gold than red to me, although there is a fine dividing line between these shades.

my old cocker was golden , she was like the red setter colour hard to exsplain thou... kinda gold but had red glittery shine to it :P i called her my cocker spangel:P, havent seen a cocker with quite the same colour coat:( shame cuz it was luvly
