Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Attacking the Garbages

I have a 3 month old puppy. She looks like a mini Rottie/Lab cross. In the last week she has decided that garbages are great fun to attack. She seems especially interested if there are female hygene products in it. We have placed the bathroom garbage in a cupboard, but the bedroom garbages are kinda a pain to be picking up all the time. Other than the obvious solution of getting garbages with lids, does anyone have any suggestions as to how we can break her of this habit?

Hi Drai,
With all problems like this, prevention is infinitely easier than cure. The easiest and least stressful solution for all, pup included, is to ensure that she can't get at the bins. Either shut them out of reach, or keep her out of the rooms they are in. To try to cure her of scavenging is trying to overcome thousands of years of evolution - it's what dogs do.

Put a child gate at the bottom of the stairs so she can't get upstairs

Same problem with Sooty. In the end i put the kitchen bin in the cupboard out of her reach.

I know it won't help, but my friend's little girl liked nothing better than emptying her nappy bin and playing in the mess when she was about 2 years old. Yuck ! If often think that dogs are very similar to children .. . . Same solution - put the garbage out of their reach !
