I have got two of my three girls under anesthetic tomorrow.
Min the 13 yr old to have her claws trimmed under reversible sedation ( she won't let anybody near her feet, we have tried everything) and MB for full Hip xrays as we now think she has got a hip problem.
I am going to be a right worry wart tomorrow.:(

you know that your dog dosnt have to have anesthetic for hip xrays, there is a product that i ask my vets to use when brie cut her pad badly and had to have 6 striches in,and chase to have xrays of his growth plates of his jaw both time the vet use i/v injection of domitor which lows the heart rate down and sedates them, when the vets finshed the work he gives them antidout of antisedan,
when brie cut her pad they said about gien her anesthetic and that she would be in for the rest of the aftrenoon with the drug she was back home with in a hour.the same with chase out for 40 mins back in the car and home again, know i now of tthis the ok time for anesthetic is for the big jobs,

WATCH OUT WITH DOMITOR!! Friends of ours just lost their Belgian through this drug. The vets used Domitor on him to get his hips x-rayed for scoring. He developed Mysitis (immune disease) very shortly afterwards, and unfortunately had to be put to sleep last Thursday.
I know Belgians are very susceptible to anaesthetic, but this should never have happened. I always make sure my vet uses Repinovet. They come round a lot quicker.

Thanks for the info Terri.
I think Stuart will use the reversible with MB as well as he is a really clicked on vet. He is so aware of all the up to date adavnces on treatments. I really do trust him.

Hi Lucy,
Sending positive vibes your way. I am sure they will be fine.
My year-old has been under four times now, last time yesterday to be spayed. No problem anytime.
Even when I had old ladies none ever had a problem with sedation or anesthetic.

I'm sure they'll be fine Lucy, Honey had to have a GA two weeks ago to remove a manky tooth, and she was right as rain a few hours later - just a bit sleepy, peaceful for a change!
Will think of you tomorrow

My poor little girl.

(feeling very bad at the mo)

Oh dear, Lucy. :( I'm so sorry. :(

Sorry to hear the hips are not good
I've got a 10 year old collie with really bad hips he is very active & fit. As long as you keep your dogs weight down they can manage an active life :)
Sorry to hear about the bad results Lucy, we bred a Lab with pretty bad hips, who came from parents with excellent hip scores, the vet put it down to being such a large litter, 12 pups carried to term with another 3 or 4 lost a week before, she had a great life despite being a big Lab, and spent every walk of her life chasing a ball to no ill effect, even tried her paw at agility, only giving up as she didn't have a head for heights. She lived to 11 and the hips were still strong at the end, she was the best dog I have every known
All the very best with her
Hayley
Hi Lucy, so have they been scored or is it your vets opinion? Not sure of the background on your dog but it`s not the end of the world for either of you & I`m sure you`ll think of having a second opinion from a specialist, (theres so many good ones in UK you know). See what your vet suggests & do some research on it.
There are a few things you can give in the way of supplements, high VitC, MSM, Glucosomine etc. Swimming will be good as well.
Try to think positively & things won`t look so bad in the morning, you`ll be surprised at the way they can handle things :)
Chin up :)

I'm so sorry Lucy but it's not the end of the world. I've known some terrible hips where the dog has led a full and active life. The thing is that you know therefore you are able to regulate things. Dont wrap her in cotton wool, she will stop when she wants to, just not too much organised exercise, exercise where she cannot stop if she starts to feel the need.
Keep the weight off even to the extent of slightly reducing her feed, not starve her but sensibly slim. The less weight the less the hips have to carry.
With reasonable exercise the build up of muscle can help compensate for the hips by giving her control of the joint.
Regards, John

HI Lucy, haven't been on here much the last few days - so sorry to hear your news. But as John says some high scoring dogs stay sound all their lives. I knew one who had a total score of over 50 and stayed sound all her life with moderate exersise. Is she actually lame?

Thanks for all the positive messages !
I feel a bit better today
John, MB is a small girl anyway as she was the runt. I think the reason why we are here now.
She is a bit stiff today and we took them all this afternoon for a walk and swim and she had to be helped back into the car But she must have been through the xrays pulled about a bit.
We were in Broadway near Evesham today and saw such a sad sight. A old Lab say 10 yrs old Lab who was so over weight and she was walking along and struggling so much as her poor bones and legs could just about carry her. Mike had to stop me going over and telling him how cruel he was being.
I just think now we are going to give here the best life that a Labrador could have !! :)

Hi Lucy,
Sorry I missed this I was thinking of you and MB and wondering how you got on. Have they actually been scored yet or was it the vet who said they were bad? I have not a lot of knowledge of this at all but I know you will do the best by her and as other say she can and may be fine all her life.
Hugs to MB..

Hi Pam
No she is nearly 11 months old and so my vet has said wait until she is 18 months to do another Xray to see if she has improved or shows any deteriation.
I could see that they were bad as good old John has given me some good tips to look out for on the Xray and my vet is very good as well. We saw a comparison of a good hip and you could see right away the difference !
Anyway I am sure she will go from strength to strength with all that we intend doing !! I am not going to write my little girl off yet ! ;)
Lucy
Hi Luc, have you read about giving Vit C for hip dysplacia? Wendall O. Belfield has written a book about it called *How to Have a Healthier Dog*. Theres a lot of people now who are trying it with good success.

Date 22.09.03 16:06 UTC

Thanks, that is interesting.
I already give her carrots and bananas and apples as treats so she should be getting enough vit C from that I would have thought and the JWB she is fed on also has vit C in it as well :)
Lucy
No Lucy, this is giving high doses of Vit C (sodium ascorbate) daily as a supplement on top of any fruit/veg. Belfield suggests *between the ages of 4-18mths build up gradually to 3.000mg* for large breeds.

Has he a web site at all or shall I get the book do you think ? It sounds very interesting reading.
Lucy
Here`s his web site Lucy :)
http://www.belfield.com/article5.html
You can have a look round first & see what you think. I`ve got his book & I like it, he tells you why he thinks dogs should have high vitC & other supps, which a lot of h/pathic vets also suggest & as you`ve noticed even the food manfs. put it in now! He`s had a couple of articles published in the AVJ & they are on the net somewhere, if you have a scout round you`ll find them, or I`ll try & find them later if you want.
I was chatting to a woman couple yrs ago & she bred from dysplastic dogs & used his recommendations, trcked the generations of pups/dogs up to last yr. & none showed dysplacia. It was a trial with Belfield I think.

This has made fastinating reading.
I am going to have a chat with my vet to discuss what we can do as want him to be aware of this as I am sure he will find it interesting reading.
Many Thanks once again !!
It is nice to know that people really care and help out when I thought on Friday that all was lost and I thought the worst. Talking to certain peeps(you know who you are ) has given me so much hope for MB and I cannot thank you all enough ! :)
