Our GSP is 11 months old and just having her first season. I seem to be getting conflicting stories as to what to expect etc. She started bleeding, or rather a watery brown fluid started to come out about 2 1/2 weeks ago. After 7 days this stopped and nothing happend until yesterday when she started bleeding again but this time it is bright red and lots of it. Has she been in season for the last 2 1/2 weeks or has she just started yesterday. No males dogs have taken any interest in her until a couple of days ago. Any advise you can give would be much appreciated.

Hi keep her away from all males now for at least 3 weeks the first heat is always a bit funny takes time to to settle, but sounds normal.

The answer may be both. Sometimes they can have a false strt, and appear to come in season, then stop and start again properly. Probably not a high enough concentration of hormones to get things going initially. I would treat her as being in season for at least 3 weeks from when the bright blood started.

You will probably notice that she will now get much more swollen, and it is best to treat her as in season until all the sweling and open look to her vulva has gone.

She will never be quite as small ther as before, but you will be able to see that she is tight and not in season.
