Having fed the pup raw chicken wings for some weeks now I'm looking to branch out! What other RMB can I feed her and where's the best place to get them from (substitue best for best value as living on student budget!) What do I ask the butcher for if I approach my local? I also want some safe recreational bones for her.

Any help Appreciated

You can feed ribs, drumsticks, necks, oxtail, lamb shanks etc; chicken carcases. You should also be feeding some just raw meat meals, raw liver, kidneys, heart etc, rabbit, pork.

The cheapest way to buy this is via the commercial producers such as AMP or Albion meats, Landywood etc or find a local wholesaler.

Don't forget raw eggs and live yoghurt. Ask the butcher for bones that he would normally pay someone to take away.

I feed coarse minced chicken with bone which I get from landywood it contains plenty meat and you can feel the bone content. I also feed their meat and veg mix which contains some bone as well as various other things such as turkey legs and wings and marrow bones which are gi normous. YOu should be to get rib and marrow bones from your local butcher. When you go buy some meat from him just ask (as you are about to finish your order) if he has any bones for the dog that usually works.

Whereabouts are you? I'm in Poole and nearby there is a chicken place (can't think of the proper name for it) that sells Chicken Carcasses for £3.00 for 30lb, 2 joint wings for £4.50 for 30lbs and 3 joint wings for £7.00 (or might be 7.50) for 30lbs. This is WAY cheap.

Also ask around at butchers. The few that do their own stuff may sell you bits cheap or even free. One of the ladies on my Raw lists gets sooo much stuff for free on a Saturday afternoon that she is giving it away too!

I'm in lancaster so looking for somewhere in the northwest. I don't have a lot of freezer space at the mo (although planning to get a small chest freezer when the other half has rebuilt the outhouse!) So I need to get smallish amounts - I can manage about 2 weeks food at a time (thats not a huge amount for one 4 moth old grey!) including the blocks of mince from AMP whcih I get from my local pet shop.

Thanks for the prices Wendy its given me an idea for what I can be aiming for even if I'm limited by the volume I can buy in one go. I'm about to venture to the local butchers to find out whether he does his own stuff.

Actually just had another thought! About supplements - I've been put off a bit by large lists of supplements for this and that. I've been giving brewers yeast and kelp tablets and she gets a huge variety of foods including some dairy, eggs, fruit(bananas are a favourite!), dried fruit and lots of different veg but think i might need to give more supplements. I'm running out of space in our little house - is there one supplement mix that puts it all in together?

Hi Sorrell.

I'm in the Northwest and I get my meat from Bambers in Preston, they are the same as Landywoods (who do deliver up here, but you'd need a BIG order for them to come to you), Albion - who won't deliver up here and AMP who's stuff is not great in my opinion. Their details are:
Bambers Frozen Meats
Chainhouse Lane Whitestake
Preston Lancashire PR4 4LD
Tel: 01772 324140

They do tripe, minced lamb, beef, liver, hearts etc etc and it's about 30p a block if you buy direct from them - you can go pick the stuff up from the factory (take a peg with you for your nose!). I think it's good stuff.

As for supplements, it seems as though you're feeding a lot of them. Is there a reason for this? I feed my guys raw and they get some Omega 3 oil and a joint supplement as a preventative measure as I have large heavy bullmastiffs. If you're feeding a balanced diet (which it seems as though you are) you shouldn't need any supplements really. Also, you say that you feed dry fruits - you should be careful with these as things like sultanas can be toxic to dogs. I dont 'know if it applies to all dried fruits, but I'd probalby lay off them just in case.

Hope that helps.

Landywood do deliver to the Preston area every two weeks but I don't think they require you to have a huge order. My friend lives nr Whittington and she has a £40 order every fourth week.

go for a mooch around the butchers, find one that actually does butcher stuff and be lovely to him or her, and you may well get pretty much all you need for nowt!!!!!!

Afraid when i lived in lancaster i didnt even have a dog, never mind raw feed, so i wouldnt know where to look......apart from the market hall for chicken wings??????
