Hi everyone i have recently adopted a 22 week dalmatian bitch she appears to have settled in well with the family including our 12yr old male lab cross. She has received very little training from her previous owner and i would now like to commence a more formal training programme. The biggest problem i face is that she is has some degree of hearing loss. I have tried to find available bear testing in our area but to no avail. If anyone knows any testing available in the west midlands area i would be most grateful for the information. I have started training using both verbal commands and hand signs to which she appears to respond and is already obeying sit give ( most of the time !!) and stop ( used to stop her jumping all over me licking my face and various other behaviours. If anyone has any futher advice about training her or could recommend a good training group for us to attend that would be great too thanks lynn.

Have a look at this site to find out about the BAER test, and who to contact about an appointment. Mrs Greening is the co-ordinator of the mobile testing sessions, and is worth contacting.

If your dal turns out to be unilaterally deaf (ie hearing only in one ear), that is no problem for a pet.

There is a very good book bu Barry Eaton about training a deaf pup, called "Hear Hear" - one of his own dogs was deaf. If you look at www.dog-dominance.co.uk there is a link to the book.
