Sorry to hear about the dog, Cushing's (hyperadrenocorticism) is an hormonal problem caused by a malfunction of the adrenal gland leading to an excess about of the hormone and can usually be controlled by giving of medication, or surgery.

The condition is treatable as long as the liver is not damaged but the treatment is very very expensive (we were quoted £45-£90 a month) without treatment she would die very slowly. We made the difficult decision to have the rescue bitch put to sleep but this was based mainly on her age (9 years old) and the fact that it had been diagnosed months before hand and the original owner had not started her treatment. We also decided her quality of life had already deteriorated and when weighing up the cost of the treatment against the time it would buy her we decided she'd be better off at rainbow bridge as it would have meant permanent foster care for her as no one would be able to afford her treatment or be prepared to take on a dog with such a serious illness. Pip ate a lot and could not walk very far, the vet explained to me that cushings is when the Adrenal gland or the Pituitary (sp?) gland stops working, if it was my dog I would have paid out for the treatment but if quality of life begins to suffer the kindest thing is PTS sadly.
That's about all I know, not sure if it will help or not but I wish them all the luck
