Hi
Have just got back from the vet after having a sperm count done on my 19 month old lab. The vet said he has a low sperm count and the sperm that were there are not good. He reckons they would not make it up to the eggs!!!!!!!!!
My question is how likely is it that this would improve? Is there anything I can do/ give him that might help?
The vet feels we should just keep trying him but it is not very likely to happen.
His mother ownly had the one litter due to problems whelping and has been spayed, as has his grandmother so any help gratefully received.
I do show him and of course he can still be a much loved pet and nuisance whether he is fertile or not:D
I've always told him he's a girl:D

The state of male fertility depends on the condision of the dog about 2 months ago, and heat is one of the main causes of a low count. Would have thought that there is every chance if you leave it for 3 to 4 months and the dog remains fit that the count will improve. Even having been on a long hot car journey can effect it and in humans tight jeans can have the same effect too, but not to be recomended as a contreceptive

If a dog has a thyroid problem it will affect the sperm count, if all else fails, eventhough he is not showing symptoms (some dogs don't) it might be worth getting a blood test to see if it is not a possibility.

If the vet has commented on the condition of the sperm then he/she has abviously seen them under a microscope, so maybe its best not to keep trying your dog, he may pass (if successful) his low count/dodgy sperm (:)) onto his offspring??
But if you want to keep trying, its worth noting that, as with other male mammals excessive masturbation/ejaculation can temporarily lower a sperm count so perhaps he should be left for a while so he can build up his reserves?!
