..Hi everyone!!..I just got a yorkie..He's very hyper and he's a year and a half old already..I'm taking him to be neutered next week but the vet said there is a 50 % chance that will calm him down since he's over a year..I don't mind that he's very active..but he won't leave my kitten and cat alone!!!..I'm not sure if it's curiosity because I don't know if he's ever been around cats or not..I have 2 other dogs, a german shepherd and a mini dachshund in the house and they don't bother the cats..When I say that he won't leave them alone, I mean he chases them constantly..to the point they hide all the time now..If I lock them in a room so he can't get to them , he'll wait outside the door for hours literally!! I can't even get his attention away from them for more that 2 minutes..He won't let me hold him, he doesn't want to go outside because he wants to go right back where the cats are..I've had him only 3 days...Does anyone know anything about this? Will the "new" wear off ? Any help would be greatly appreciated..I'm not getting rid of my cats and I hate to keep them locked up cause it's not their fault...Thanks for your help...Cyndi

He has probably not been with cats before. Your cats need to be able to escape from him by going upwards apparently its a cat thing

I would not lock the cats in one room as this will not help as you have already found. I had a friend who's dog used to chase cats seriously with an intend to harm them. He met my two late cats who were both brought up with dogs(one was actually reared on my Border Collies phantom pregancy milk)they did not fear dogs & did not run away just the opposite & they used to chase him ! When they both cornered him one day the experience cured him & he never offered to chase any cat again

We homed a German Shepherd when she was 6 yrs old,she was a beautifull dog in every way,& we asked her previous owner how she was with cats.We were assured she was fine with them. It became apparent very quickly that she'd been taught to chase them out of the garden. We had 2 cats that were used to dogs, but ran from her & you could see them sitting on the fence figuring out a safe route to come & get their breakfast! My husband who is not a cat lover made a comment that maybe we should get a kitten,we'd tried lots of other ways to get over this & none worked. My friends cat had a litter,my husband liked 1 & I liked another-we brought them both home! I sat with the kittens curled up asleep on my lap,we allowed meggie to come in & she was very curious & had lots of sniffs etc,we stayed calm,& the kittens didnt react to her. It ended up that they were allowed in her bed,go near to her food & drink bowls & she really mothered them. And she stopped chasing the other cats, they did'nt have the privalages that the kittens had though! Sadly we lost meggie when she was 11[3 yrs ago],she still makes us smile though! I'm not suggesting you try this,it was an unusual solution!

Can't help re dogs and cats, but will say do not expect having him castrated to calm him down for anymore than about 3 weeks whilst he recovers. He is a young terrier, doing as young terriers do.

PS Can the cats get onto a high table, shelf to get out of the way.

Hi,
Castration only has an effect on problems caused by hormones. Chasing cats isn't hormonally based, nor is being young and energetic, so castration won't 'cure' these problems.

Hi Cyndi,

I saw a 1-1/2 year old male Yorkie at Battersea this weekend - he was really hyper - could this possibly be your new dog? If not, they sound like twins.

I would let the cats out under your supervision. They should certainly be able to jump out of the way of your Yorkie. Shutting them away is most likely only increasing your Yorkies interest level in them.

It is just possible that the first time one of your cats gets annoyed enough to swat your Yorkie on the nose he will learn that cats deserve some respect. :-)

I say give him a chance - its only been a few day's..No doubt that by seperating them you will only make the dog more curious about the cats, subsequently even more excited when they meet! Make the most of his funny years-one day he'll be older and less likely to run around like a nutter!! :) I like fun dog's!
Also, castration will not get rid of learnt behaviour.
Sarah.
