Have a two year old Japanese akita, with an excellent pedigree from kennel Club Breeder, HIKAYS in Wakefield, registered as ' HIKAYS RISING SON'. I have not shown him as yet due to not having the time but have been advised to by a friend who shows and breeds Bulldogs. Is it nessasary to show him in order to breed or is there another way for breeders of Akitas to see him. I have people approach me when i walk him intersted in breeding but i decline due to the fact that they always want to breed him with another breed.

I have replied on your other post, there is a bit more information here but my advice is the same. Your boys breeder will undoubtedly be able to advise on getting into showing, an also answer the question of whether or not he is suitable for breeding. I'm not in Akita's but have heard of the Hikays affix. Good Luck, you might love showing.Incidentally you are so right to decline offers to mate your lad with a different breed, good on ya.

Breeders want to use the best possible mates for their bitches, so showing is the only practical way to have him sean, appreciated and assessed against his peers, to hopefully pique interest in the right sort of person, with a compatible bitch.

Hi,

Firstly, it's great that you're asking for advice.

I have to say though, it really is necessary to show, it will give you and others a chance to see how good your dog is when shown against others of his breed. Basically, how close he is to the breed standard.

People 'in the breed' will only want to use the best dogs for their bitches, and the way to find out if your dog is good enough is to get out there and do consistently well.

I have GSD's so don't know much about Akitas, but this applies to all breeds.

Good on you for not letting people with other breeds use your dog!

Take care, and good luck

Lisa
