My rottie Bruno has what looks like a bad case of dandruff.I have heard that evening primrose oil can help but can anyone tell me how much to administer to a 46kg dog and long before I would see a difference.

5 - 6 capsules per day, minimum 2 weeks to 6 weeks or never depending on what is causing his scurf.

It might be worth getting his skin checked out at the Vets.

Bad cases of dandruff can sometimes be caused by the Chelyetiella Mite (also called walking dandruff) if that is what it is then different treatment is necessary either with frontline or Aludox.

He already has frontline for flea treatment would this cover the mite aswell?
- By Lady Dazzle [gb] Date 09.09.03 18:31 UTC
It depends on whether you are using spray or drop on. The drop on Frontline is not as effective as the spray against mites.

It also depends on how long ago he was sprayed.

I have just had a litter of pups who developed this, from god knows where as none of my dogs have been to any shows very recently. The only thing I can come up with is that one of the dogs we groom has brought it in. Although my dogs very rarely go into the grooming room I suppose like everything the darned things could have been on our clothes.

Thanks for your help, He has the drops and last time he had them was about a month ago but he has two more doses to go. We have a cat aswell could he pick it up from him? When we first came back off holiday he was really bad but the last two weeks it is better than it was,but if you brush his coat it has white flecks in it. It isnt bothering him though. I keep brushing him daily as this seems to help aswell.

HI. Tell us how he gets on. Hope it all goes well. I would check your cat aswell, seems obvoius, but if he is the problem, then you can't sort the dog out untill the cat is clear! Glad to hear is is getting slightly better, but it the flakes worsen, visit your vet, or atleast call them so they can give you their opinion.

Hi thanks for your concern,I have two children and Bruno is my third big baby you do worry about them dont you. Anyway the cat Arthur, is being treated for fleas aswell,I did ask the vet about it and they told me if it wasnt bothering him to leave it but if it was itching him to bring him in and they would have a look.

Cheyletillia (sp?) is a zoonoses which means not only can your cat have it but so could you! It is the rabbit fur mite. You would probably scratch though!

Primrose oil will help but maybe you should look at why your rottie has the condition in the first place, the first think to check is his diet!

I took your advice and took Bruno to the vets, they had a look at him and still say that the dry skin is not really anything to worry about and I have started him on the primrose oil which he actually likes. As for his diet we have had him on a diet because he was getting too fat,so his diet now consists of Pal Complete and the odd Jumbone.

check the bag does it contain beef, soya, wheat or dairy products all of which are associated with skin problems in dogs, there are a lot of dry foods that are free of the above. Don't let your vet talk you into Hills Science food they sell it because they make a lot of money from it, there are cheaper brands that are equally as good.

It does contain cereal but doesnt say if it is wheat based none of the others though but he has been on this food since he was a puppy. We did try a free sample of the hills science food and he didnt like it. Could you recommend an alternative?
