Went on my very first homecheck tonight although it was as an observer only .
It was a nice easy one - lovely family with nice behaved and well mannered children looking to home a kitten . They lived in a lovely quiet road and had a nice family home.
The answer was a "yes" so there's one happy family and (hopefully) one lucky kitten rehomed :)
Although the worrying aspect for me was that apparently as one animal is rehomed another moves in to take its place in the rescue :(
I am due to perform the next check we go on- with Fay the experieced lady as a bystander ( eeek)

Well done and congratulations.

But just think if you hadn't done the homecheck then the kitten wouldn't have ahome to go to and another "unwanted" kitten could not take it's place.

A circle that starts with you :D

Hi lel, glad it went well. Do you use a form to work through the homecheck and have they seen the dog/cat first? I'll be interested to hear how you get on.:)

I assume you have to be a fairly strong person to do such a job, so well done and keep up the good work.

Hi Lorelei
we are sent forms that cover practically everything -From the familyand neighbours to the house and environment that the animal is to be homed in.
It disheartening to hear that when one is placed there is another rescue to move into the animals place :( and some of the stories for people wanting to rehome their pets is unbelievable.
One lady said her husband was fed up with the dog moulting white hair and in her words the dog was "too fluffy" so they didnt want it :( ( P-leeeeease!!).
Another wanted to rehome because she had split up with her husband and she wanted to go out that weekend
The lady we checked last night had rehomed a pup some years ago from the RSPCA . Pup had been found in atrocious conditions and the RSPCA actually homed the dog with her while it was still covered in scabs and even though she had an 8 month old baby .
This rescue home I check for will not rehome until all animals are well and off medication and older dogs and cats have to be neutered and the owner has to agree to neuter kittens and pups when old enough . They are also microchipped and registered to the home. The new owners also have to agree not to rehome the pup ( it has to be returned to the rescue) and the animal is NOT to be pts.

Sounds straightforward for you to fill in, although the hard part is judging whether they're telling the truth but I expect follow ups are done. What happens if a prospective owner works? This relates to other threads where people have been rejected for working at all never mind full time.

I think they are realistic in the fact that people do have to work . As long as the dog isnt left for hours and hours it isnt a problem . Cats are slightly easier to rehome as they are not as dependant as a dog.

Edited to say it does depend on the dogs age and the individual dog of course
