i have a 10 week old cavalier - she's been generally since we had her over the last 2 weeks.

but she sometimes scoots her bum along the ground, seems to lick it a bit (but i never had a dog before so i am not sure if she is doing it a lot or just a bit) and she had a v funny poo this afternoon - she always gets agitated before she poos, it clearly disturbs her a bit. THis afternoon she did one which she had to strain at a lot and then it was quite oily whereas she's normally quite firm/dry. Also mid-way through i noticed a little bit of liquid squirt out! (Anal glands emptying maybe??)

We feed her on Eukanuba pupy & junior complete and have some treats for training/behaviour rewards. I did start some new ones a couple of days ago (an australian company's, Natrures GIft or something) ALso - and i think this is prob the problem - my mum fed her some roast chicken last night for the first time. Not a massive piece, maybe about 1/4 or 1/3 of the size of a (female) palm, 1cm thick.

DO you think i should wait & see how she is for 24 hours or take her to hte vet asap? ALso does anyone have any ideas. I am dead worried about her, probably irrationally so.

I would suggest you check your puppy's anal glands & if possible add a little extra roughage to the diet-bland bran in small amounts is usually enough

thanks everyone - i think we're off to the vet's today! i swear i have learnt more in the past two & half weeks with the pup than since i went to uni!! she's so worth it though, does the sweetest little things....

My cavalier pup wiggles his bum on the floor, as does his mum, the breeder told me its quite a common thing in cav's and not to worry about it. He has been wormed regularly with Panacur, and his anal glands checked by the vet were found to be clear so the vet said its a habit he's got into (could have been learnt from his mum!) He doesn't do it as often as he used to, when he does do it it generally means he needs to go out to the toilet! Its still probably a good idea to get your pup checked out, to put your mind at rest. I wouldn't have thought the chicken would have upset him too much, as when a dog has a bad tum the vet usually recommends a bland chicken and rice diet for a couple of days.

Hope this helps!

thanks - she's not doing it too much so i don't think she's in distress but we're going to the vet's later on anyway, can't hurt to get it checked out and anyway the more she goes to our lovely vet before she's 12 weeks, hte better in my eyes.

she only did it once this morning, about 30 mins before doing a poo, so maybe you're right, its a toilet indicator.

i think she was just grumpy the 24 hours after having hte roast chicken as she LOVED the chook so much, it distresed her she couldn't eat more of it! Esp as there was inevitrably a smell of it lingering round the place... I think we're going to in general keep her only on the dry food - maybe when she's a bit more settled she can try some human food but ONLY as a treat and ONLY once all waste traces have been put out/cooking dishes washed up etc...... I haven't ever seen her so distressed as when she was after some more of that chicken, i think it would be cruel to tease her with it again!

SO thanks everyone for your advice again - if there's anything interestng from the vet, will post it here....
