Does anybody have my problem ? I have a 3 year old Border Collie which I got from Battersea in January 2003. She is wonderful, but does not like people ! She has boned very well with my partner and I, but will not go to anybody else. She runs away, won't chase her ball (which she loves) and hides behind a chair ! We have tried everything, from treats to ignoring her - nothing works ! Any help would be much appreciated as I would like to go on holiday, but can't leave her.

I recently saw a collie acting just like this whilst in wales for the weekend and I have had a nervous collie myself. I will suggest the same to you as I did to this couple. Try having as many visitors as you can come to your home (not all at once) or a place you know your collie is comfortable and when they arrive they should just ignore her and under no circumstances look her in the eye (very aggresive or authoritive in dog language) if she responds a little and is food orientated they should give her a treat all the time not talking directly to her and not looking her in the eye. If she is food orientated then you should encourage visitors to treat her when she is calm and not hiding behind you even if she wont go to them, they could gently throw a treat in her direction for example. there is no magic cure for this like my own problem of a barking collie! Just the key to all training issues patience! She will feel more comfortable if you dont fuss and make her greet people and if people dont force themselves on her. Like most traing you need to start small and with time she will come round. What is she like with other dogs and there owners when your out walking?
