As Mrs. Beaton said in her cookery book, "First catch your Golden!"

What sort of training? Pet, Ringcraft, Obedience or Gundog?

First sort out exactly what you want to do then study lines of dogs which perform will at that discipline. If you don’t already have a bitch then watch as many as you can and try to get something from the lines that you really like. Remember, this is going to be the foundation bitch of your line so it must be good or your line will be rubbish! Once you have the bitch then study up on the pedigrees, talk to your breeder and anyone else you can find about stud dog lines. Try to get a feeling for what will compliment your bitch. You will have plenty of time, two to two and a half years so there is no rush. Apart from studying stud dogs use the time to study the training discipline which takes your fancy. Read, study, practice then read, study and practice again.

Regards, John
