Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Greyhound with flaky skin

Hello again

My grey has settled well on BARf since my earlier notice (even brave enough to feed bones now!) and is doing beautifully. All except for having dandruff! Her coat is shiny and she seems healthy and fit in every other way. I thought the flaky skin is because of vit B complex deficiency but shes been having vetzyme in the recommended dose so shouldn't be a problem? Could she be missing something else from her diet causing the flaky skin? It doesn't seem to bother her as it isn't too itchy. Any ideas anyone?

Thanks

Sorrel

Are you feeding any FBO (Fish Body Oil); this is high in Omega 3s and is needed to balance out the high Omega 6s in grain fed meat. You will need to add Vitamin E as well as this has a synergistic effect. You can feed 1000mg of FBO and between 2-400 iu of Vitamin E. You may well find this improves the skin. You can also feed Evening Primrose Oil; however none of this will work if the skin condition is caused by an allergy.

How long have you been feeding completely raw?

I noticed my lot went through a short dandruffy itchy stage, which i took to mean they were getting rid of any of the toxins or wotever from their previous diet. Whatever it was, they came through it and are now damn near dandruff free!

Thanks Em I've been feeding raw for about 3-4 weeks. She had the dandruff before we started raw food - did think it was part of wheat allergy but all of the other symptoms have gone since we changed. Shes been a bit better the last 2 days - perhaps your right!

I've not been adding FBO as a supplement because I give her tinned sardines once a week ish. Do I need to give more?

If you don't want to feed FBO then I would feed her fish more than once a week personally.

it does take a while to get rid of the dandruff!

I feed mine tinned sardines almost every morning for breakfast, sometimes with veg, soemtimes with cottage cheese, sometimes on its own. give it a go!
