Hi, I read somewhere that garlic was not great for dogs as it was from the same family as onions, which we know are bad. However, I have been used to giving our dogs garlic and always though it was good for them, with no ill effects. Anyone know about this? Imp.

Onions have been implicated in hemolytic anaemia; although garlic is from the same family it does not have the same effect and is NOT toxic to dogs, cats, horses or humans. All my dogs and myself ingest copious amounts; it is an internal antiseptic, digestion aid and is believed (by some) to be a deterrant to both internal and external parasites.

Excellent - that's what I thought. Thanks for your input. :)
Hi Imp,
Earlier this year someone brought an article into dog club, which said garlic is okay in moderate amounts, but too much can actually cause a dog to get anaemia. So I went home and looked up on the internet (as you do!), and apparently it is true - so I wouldn't give my dogs unlimited garlic.

According to the stuff I have read, garlic begins to lose its medicinal properties when it is chopped or processed by other means, so it is best to give it fresh and as whole as possible.

HI all...
I have horses and have to give them garlic.
I've always wondered whether to give it to the dogs too, so I'm glad this topic was posted.
A couple more questions though, how much should I give? (I have GSD's and BC's)
Also, is the horse stuff okay or is there a difference?
Thanks
Lisa

-25 pounds - 1/8 chopped clove
25-50 pounds - 1/4 chopped clove
50-75 pounds - 3/4 chopped clove
100 pounds - one chopped clove
these are not maximum doses. I give my weimis a minced clove per day. The fresh stuff is better than the powdered or tablet form. Garlic, is garlic and so unless the horse stuff has something else in it it should be fine!
