Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Minced chickead tripe

I have just changed my 2 SBT over to minced chicken and tripe, however the supplier said that as long as this is fully defrosted I can feed it raw but didn't like the sound of that so I cook it in a spare microwave at the bottom of the garden in a shed due to the stink, but it seems very rubbery I have tried chopping before cooking as I devide between my 2 dogs, I have tried cooking this for 10 mins and 5 mins but it still seems really tough but the dogs love it no matter how it looks or smells, I feed it with puppy complete as a mixer. Can i give it raw, when it is fully defrosted there is a lot of blood in the water surely if this was cooked and ok to feed raw it would be clear or slight blood.

Comments please!

It'll be fine raw, don't worry! When I've defrosted a joint or a chicken for our own use, I always pour the raw juices over the dogs' meals, and they relish it.

Yes you can feed raw; I cannot imagine anyone cooking green tripe! (LOL). Dogs tend to love anything that is extremely smelly:)

I was worried about feeding it raw and giving them food poisoning as my little one is only 15 weeks old and my eldest is 18 months old, but I will try it and see how we get on, just to point out its not green tripe, I tried the washed tripe but was advised that this had all the goodness washed out of it.

Many thanks for your comments

Well I would not bother feeding white tripe!

Dogs digestive systems are designed to cope with raw food.......

Hi, tried the raw tripe wihich they loved but got up this morning fed them as usual Murphy the little one has been sick after eating his breakfast and as a runny tummy, should I continue with the raw chicken/tripe or change back to dried, I don't want to make my puppy ill or is just teh change over, previously when I first changed them on to meat I cooked it but yesterday after reading the forum I decided to give it raw. Hope I haven't given him food poisoning because I did not cook it, it was thoroughly defrosted.

Do a changeover gradually. For a few days give three-quarters of their normal food with a quarter of the new. Then for another few days give half-and-half. Then three-quarters new to a quarter old before you completely change. It's much easier on their tums that way.

Niki you would be much better off buying just tripe not chicken and tripe that way it will not have an upset tummy.

I have fed my 5 month old puppy with tripe included in his diet since he was 8 weeks, he pinched the older dogs all the time and refused to eat his own point blank, so we added a bit each day and the liquid off the thrawed trip to his complete,I would not say he was fat but he is solid and he has no problems with his tummy this cleared up in about 4 or 5 days. He also loves chicken wings, this is the first pup I have tried them on as I was very worried, but he loves them with no ill effect. He also has minced chicken, but he seems to like the smell of tripe

Feeding minced abattoir waste and tripe is no problem raw, but you do need to make sure you supply the other dietary requirements of a dog.
