Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / feedback on butchers tins
- By happyme [gb] Date 03.09.03 21:04 UTC
Has anyone got anything to say about feeding butchers tinned meat as i have been told by a vet to feed this as he suffers with mild colitis and anal gland problems and apparently most dried food cause this as they contain more wheat ect is it any good and does anyone know (doubt it) if it really nothing artificial in

All I can tell you is I put a spoonfull or two ony my 'dynamic duos' complete food......... and they love it. My vet also said that Chappie (also tripe based ) was one of the better tinned dog foods, however I'm sure you may get conflicting opinions :)

Thanks and yes my vet mentioned chappie supposed to be very good as too many dry foods contain all this wheat ect its all so confusing apart from putting him on intestinal eukanuba thats my only other choice

If you're thinking about feeding your dog on Eukanuba/IAMS, put this into to the search option, top right ,and then see what you think :(

Wow!! I don't feed either of these brands to my dogs or cats, and am very glad after reading this that I don't.

Im confused what did you mean either of these brands surely youve read the post wrong butchers and chappie are good feeds its eukanuba thats the worrying one
- By liberty Date 03.09.03 21:37 UTC
JMHO but I think it's because Eukanuba is also reffered to as Iams.

Still dont like what i hear with regard to iams eukanuba anyway never have i used to work in a vets and try to get owners to change to it hated every minute of it as i knew things about the food animal testing ect

I was speaking about Eukanuba and Iams. I also heard some worrying goss. about the testing of these foods last year:( Not sure if it was true or not, so will not go into detail. But it was enough to put me off buying.:(

My dogs love a spoon of tinned Butcher's tripe on their breakfast - but cor! It doesn't half make them windy! I find tinned Chappie (mainly fish based) much better.
- By happyme [gb] Date 03.09.03 21:37 UTC
Well i would rather the wind than the anal gland colitis problems coming back every two weeks :)

Butchers Tripe Mix is the only tinned meat I feed, they all love it and do well on it - Westies and a Lab. They just have a little with their complete biscuit to get thier noses in. Its great for putting weight on too, so be sparing if a dog tends to be overweight. I haven't noticed that they are windy on it - perhaps they are until they get used to it? I used to feed Chappie and have heard its great for dogs with sensitive tums, as sometimes Butchers is a bit too rich for some dogs - but I couldn't stand their "fishy breath" on the Chappie. :D

It gets the thumbs up from me. I've tried quite a few of the complete diets, gradually introducing them. Two gave my Mini Schnauzer colitis for a couple of days. My whippet wouldn't touch most of them and eventually got bored of the ones he initially preferred. Have now gone back to the Butcher's tripe and I've had no trouble since. They both love it and eat it with gusto every day and they've never had the runs or loose stools since.

Ive been feeding butchers tinned meat for about 6 months now with mixer. I changed his diet to this after reading up on different foods, main reason I wanted to change was because he had quite bad skin.

After 6 months there is a huge improvement in his skin and he loves it. Would definately recommend it.
